The long walk back from Mount Keen. #SilentSunday #MunroBagging

A pale, dusty vehicle track runs through an old pine forest, disappearing into the trees in the middle distance. Sun filters through the trees and casts their shadows on the track.

For any new followers who are here for the incredible views up Scottish Munros - today was less spectacular 😆 #munrobagging #Munros #CisteDubh

Report from mwis.org.uk this morning...

Unusually cold. Heavy showers west/northern Scotland, in north Wales and toward southern Pennines. Hail, lightning and on Scottish high tops snow. Very windy and gusty near showers. Little rain and sunny spells in S Highlands, southeastern Scotland and North Pennines.

Not the best eh? Especially after there were many red lobsters roaming the country on Monday morning after a particularly sunny weekend...

So to finish off. I really enjoyed our walk despite the haze, the soggy peat bog, and bugs are just summer in the Highlands.

Taking my time worked out just fine.

And I have a bunch of photies to jog my memory later.

A quick phone snap of the the very steep rock wall on the way up to the summit. I wish I'd thought of a photo with Skye still at the top for some scale but I was pre-occupied with making sure she got down okay. I'd say it's 12 feet to maybe 15 feet high.

Skye knew we were at the top and therefore before I could grab my windproof, she demanded her lunch. Seems fair. I had chicken, chocolate and an empire biscuit! So much for my diet.

It's a real joy to be up high. And to pick out hills I've done, or places I've been. To spy hills yet to do.

We wondered aimlessly about the top, taking photies, and Just Being.

Looking through the haze to Sgùrr a' Mhaoraich and the single track bridge to Kinloch Hourn. Loch Cuaich far below us.Skye just flopped down here and posed for me, I didn't ask her to. Nice mountain backdrop of Sgùrr Mòr and Sgùrr na Ciche.Wondering the grass and rocky top, looking back at the summit cairn and windshelter. Here the grasses are on the turn ready for the autumn.Looking down to Loch Cuaich and the dam in the distance. It feels a long way to get back.

Although it's very steep the last bit is just fantastic! The path zigzags easily upwards, gaining height rapidly. A few rocky bits pose no problem until the near vertical 'scrambly bit'. Even then Skye scooted up it without me directing her and I figured I ought to follow her! Not too difficult with plenty of hand and foot holds so I wasn't too bothered about getting down.

And then we soon made it to the top. Yay!

Looking back down to the boggy top of the ridge. Loch Cuaich just visible through the mist and a bit of the forestry in Glen Kingie to the right.Skye looks up at the steep path to the summit. There's a sliver of Gleouraich just visible too.A very hazy view down into Glen Kingie and the hills accessed from Loch Arkaig and Glen Dessary. A little of the foreground in the corner of the photo shows just how steep the final climb is.Skye sitting in front of the summit windshelter. Beyond are hazy views to the South Glenshiel Ridge amongst other hills.

We took our time crossing the bog to the edge of the forestry and the ridge. There's a sort of path or burn onto the ridge then a pretty decent old stalkers path. I still wasn't rushing, but it was nice to make progress and take in the views, misty and hazy as it was.

The wee beasties had by now woken up so on with the Smidge.

As the gradient eases the final way up to the summit comes into view.

The view across the ridge to Spidean Mialach. The grass is gradually turning golden as late summer turns into autumn.Skye stands on the ridge looking straight at me.A wide angle view across the wide ridge, Loch Cuaich just visible, with the hills of Gleoraich and Spidean Mialach beyond.Looking across the top of the ridge to the final steep ascent to Gairich. It's a formidable looking bump of grass and crags.

It was a cool, misty early start on Saturday morning at Loch Cuaich dam. Despite little breeze the midges were staying in bed a while longer till the day warmed up.

Gairich, meaning the peak of the roaring, or yelling, on account of the stags during the rut. It has a reputation for the first 2.6km across the moor being boggy which it certainly lived up to.

Loch Cuaich dam silhouetted against a bright blue sky with sparse, high wispy cloud and a little mist. From the dam looking across a misty Loch Cuaich to the fine peak of Gairich.Skye already muddy from the rolling peaty moorland, sitting amongst the grass, moss, and heather. She carries her lunch in the rucksack. My usual view of Skye off ahead sniffing the heather. A clear path drops to the edge of pine forestry and the bottom of the ridge to Gairich. Distant hills just about visible in haze that still lingers.

So there really are (sometimes) blue skies in Scotland on days when you go up a Munro or two!

The Tarmachan Ridge today, taking on Munro no. 85, Meall nan Tarmachan. Few showers here and there but never got soaked and tops clear. Fantastic wee ridge. The slightly less common horseshoe route, approaching from the north.
