The Story of Bryan Cook and Inner City 90s Sydney
Inner city Sydney in the 1980s and 90s was a very special place. I first spent extended amounts of time in Newtown from 1991. The creativity and energy of the community was amazing. Music, art, performance and writing as well as dancing, singing, sculpting and raving were happening everywhere. Large loft-style warehouse spaces could be rented for a few hundred dollars a week and large groups could live in them too. I moved permanently to Sydney in late 1992 and the city was my base until late 1999. The city has changed a lot since then and on my first and only visit back since, in 2023, it was almost unrecognisable.
This is the story of Bryan Cook. A local inner city photographer and Australian independent music lover who captured some of the most unique, unseen photos around the inner city pubs like The Hopetoun, The Vulcan, The Sydney Trade Union Club The Evening star, The Strawberry Hills Hotel and more.

More punning wordplay (‘Udder Worldly’) and scriptural pick’n’mixing (‘Onan Rides the Whale’) is aligned to prominent, viscous bassings alongside ghostly breaths of woodwind. One number even suggests Dixieland 78s interpreted by a tribe of pygmies. Their cathartic releases are spewed straight from the earth’s core. This is the aural transfixing of melted rock and the hyperspace freeway. A total psychedelic journey. Been reminded (thank you) that I used to occasionally toot about odd items I have around that reflect some of my family history under #MyHistory so it's time for another one!
My maternal grandparents lived in #Plymouth, Devon and my brother and I used to visit every summer. The entrance hallway was typically British with a coat rack, umbrella stand and a wall covered in 'things'. All of which fell into the 'never to be touched' category making them all the more fascinating.
This was one.

Here's the first of what I call my grandfather's 'pocket litter'. It's a medallion as you can see by the hole/chain.
Known: found in his effects. My mother did not recognise it at all. Grandmother previously deceased. Well cared for so significant somehow. The cheap chain is Mom wanting a keepsake.
Guess: likely Masonic. Grandfathers trade and look of something accessed frequently but furtively fits. Similar symbology
Latin stamped, not engraved. Non-magnetic.
