#Mycorrhizal

8/9 Next to that Pierre is an expert when it comes to soil fungi like arbuscular #mycorrhizal funghi (AMF) but also soil bacteria, he's particularly good at genetically fingerprinting and quantyfing different taxa. I have again learned a lot from him. He has published a lot of work on the crop-soil-microbiome interaction and we'll surely collaborate in the future as I want to integrate #breeding for improved soil-microbiome interaction as a research line in my work at #WUR.

It is fascinating how in the has organized itself. The # networks are a good example. They connect and all other to form a and transport substances and information to exactly where they are needed most.

If we set aside our way of looking at things (you could just as well call it arrogance and conceit), we see this in all living , from bacteria to humans, from anthills to the entire .

Researchers reveal how #mycorrhizal species regulate plant-soil #carbon in forests
phys.org/news/2023-11-reveal-m

Mycorrhizal type regulates trade-offs between #plant and #soil carbon in #forests nature.com/articles/s41558-023

"Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) #fungi are the most common types of #MycorrhizalFungi. The type of plant-mycorrhizal association is critical for #forest carbon cycling by influencing plant growth, nutrient acquisition, and soil #CarbonStorage."

Encountered some #fungi during our walk at #Kirroughtree yesterday, and explained to our 7yo about the #mycorrhizal network. Looking for a textbook on the subject, I came across the name Paul Stamets, which, having watched #startrekdiscovery, struck me as just too much of a coincidence. Seems the contemporary expert influenced the whole #sporedrive plotline, and the Lt Cmdr was named after him in tribute! Hence the #MerlinSheldrake book I saw in #wigtown today referencing both!

One exciting thing about this project is its multi-faceted focus on community

Below ground, we're looking at the #SoilFoodWeb and effectiveness of adding either commercially available #mycorrhizal fungi or on-farm cultivated "Indigenous Micro-Organisms" (IMOs) to tree potting mixes and transplant field sites

Above ground, looking at the impact those organisms have on plant health and productivity, as well as the farmer knowledge networks needed to grow & sustain #agroforestry based livelihoods

Ok... this is a long read. It is very meandering but it is starting to encompass many of the things that I walk with when i am walking on the land. It's taken me a few days to tease it out, writing in breaks and pauses. I am trying to build language around something deeply sensory and explain it all at once. I think I will take it down even further, but at least this part is out.

"For the sake of this thought exercise I am going ask you to pretend you are in a perfectly dark room. I donโ€™t mean a nighttime room with starlight, or streetlight coming in. I mean a dark room. Like the kind we used for photography. Or the darkest sealed room in a house โ€“ basement with no windows, nothing. There is no light source. But for some reason you know there is another human in the space."
