Weakening this agreement not only undermines Maori rights but also risks creating deeper divisions in society. Not honoring this agreement means returning to a history of injustice rather than building on reconciliation & respect for all. The agreement should not be seen as a gift from the British colonial power. It’s a hard-won right & an acknowledgment of their losses. It’s about acknowledging that the imbalances that were created still affect groups 200 years later.

When people in the public gallery above joined in loudly, Speaker Gerry Brownlee suspended Parliament for an hour until the gallery was cleared."
