#NCEI

2025-05-12

It seems that President Trump's continuing war on climate science is going to adversely affect my own "#Arctic citizen science" work:

GreatWhiteCon.info/2025/05/tru

"I frequently post a summary of the Arctic section of the United States’ National Snow and Ice Data Center’s monthly review of the current state of the #cryosphere.

However, this month I have some additional bad news to report. According to a May 6th 'Level of Service Update for Data Products' from the #NSIDC:

'Effective May 5, 2025, #NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (#NCEI) will decommission its snow and ice data products from the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (#COGS).

As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported.

Sea Ice Index...

If you rely on these products in your work, research, education, or planning, we invite you to share your story at nsidc@nsidc.org. Your input can help us demonstrate the importance of these data sets and advocate for future support.'

If you are a resident of the US you may also wish to contact your local friendly neighbourhood politician(s) about the matter?"

A friend joked yesterday that Trump wants to annex Greenland to lower the average temperature in the US so he can ignore climate change.

Looking at the NCEI cutting its snow and ice data products on Tuesday and its Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters database today, I'm starting to wonder if that's actually the plan 😖

I'm currently pulling as many #NCEI datasets as possible; once I have appropriate storage configured I'll move to the (presumably more stable, but exponentially larger) S3/Google/Azure sets. gitlab.com/labay/noaa-archive

#NOAA #OAR would be axed entirely, #NCEI loses a quarter of its budget. This would devastate our ability to survive as a species

#NCEI safe for now, but

Some of the websites slated to go down include the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), the Climate Program Office, the home website of NOAA research and the Earth Prediction Innovation Center, which maintains a cloud-based weather forecasting system developed as a public-private partnership.
The NSSL outage may affect some programs, such as the Hazardous Weather Testbed, that the NWS uses for severe weather forecasting.

I have implemented hodographs as well!

#meteorology #nws #noaa #ncei #igra

A chart showing wind direction and speed veering with height, plotted on the zoomed-in upper right quadrant of a polar map. This hodograph shows the same sounding data in the previous post, indicating a great amount of directional sheer at changing levels of the atmosphere, indicative of violent, long-lived tornadoes.

git.lsit.ucsb.edu/publicdata/N

This isn't the full archive and there's plenty more to come. Keep in mind that the size listed there is underrepresented. This is ~650GB so far. Unfortunately, the NCEI website has been spotty some this week, too.

I expect a full archive will easily exceed 1TB of data.

Data Request For Potomac River Tragedy - National Centers For Environmental Information (NCEI), NOAA In The News

“A CNN Reporter requested data to portray the depth of the Potomac River near the site of the tragic plane and helicopter crash. The Digital Elevation Model Bathymetry (DEM) Team responded with information on how to use NCEI’s high-resolution Continuously Updated Digital Elevation Models (CUDEMs) to generate a map of the Potomac River and provided an example map…”

does anyone have an archive of #NOAA #NCEI data? I checked the internet archive but even the January 14th snapshot talks about "intermittent data outages"...

Hurricane Helene has "significantly impacted operations at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)." -- now impacting satellite operations for LANCE-MODIS.
#HurricaneHelene #NCEI #NOAA #SatelliteImaging #MODIS

Dear LANCE-MODIS Users:
Hurricane Helene has significantly impacted operations at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The NCEI generates and provides Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST), an ancillary product which is used as an input for MODIS cloud products (MxD06, MxD35) from NRT and Standard streams. This OISST product has not been produced by NCEI since September 27 (the last file was received was on September 26) as their systems are still down. The Standard and NRT Cloud products are being generated, but by using the last available OISST data. We do not have any estimate on when the production of this data will resume, and till that happens, the MODIS and VIIRS cloud retrieval algorithms will continue to use the last available data, with potential impact on cloud retrieval quality.

We will provide more information and updates as these become available.

Regards,
lance-modis Users Support

I was looking for time series data of temps by county, I found that #NOAA #NCEI have bulk text files with climate data (like avg/high/low temp) for every US county for every month going back to 1895.

But, it's in a somewhat hard to use fixed-width format. Fear not, I wrote a python script to convert to a normalish CSV, plus the script adds five-digit FIPS codes to make merging into other data sets easier.

The conversion script is here on github:
