Nochmal einen herzlichen Dank an @joliyea, @cartocalypse und die anderen, die die #NIAM2025 möglich gemacht haben. Das war ein viel zu kurzer Tag, um alle bekannten Gesichter anzusprechen neben den vielen interessanten Vorträgen. Gerne wieder, gerne auch noch mit Abendveranstaltung oder gemeinsamen Mittagessen.

Die 11. NIAM-Tagung im Wilhelm von Humboldt-Saal im Haus Unter den Linden der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Ein voll besetzter, sehr hoher, Saal mit Stuckverzierungen und der Anmoderation eines Vortrags, der über Anleihen beim Interface-Design sprechen wird.

My takeaway from #NIAM25 re. #DataJournalism x #RemoteSensing on aerial and satellite data is that it's still too complex and complicated.

We can't expect data journalists to build data pipelines, process satellite scenes, remove clouds, stitch scenes together, to understand or interpret multi-spectral or radar data.

At #NIAM25 today the trend I'm seeing is very similar scroll-driven story telling maps across the spectrum of German journalism.

It's interesting that there's so little they share, maybe the underlying map stack or map renderer — realistically there's only OpenStreetMap and MapLibre — but that's about it.

Coming from an open source background that's such a different mindset to me.

Awesome talk about 77709 #Torlikon a place in #BadenWürttemberg that doesn't exist and yet does.

On the one hand it shows how little validation there is and how easy it is to get fictional places into many commercial services.

On the other hand it shows the self-healing map properties of OpenStreetMap and related.

Seeing how many map based data journalism workflows use Figma, Adobe Illustrator, etc. in addition to and on top of #QGIS #MapLibre shows me how limiting the geo tools we have still are.
