@adapalmer
This is probably the best news we have had this year. I am so pleased and grateful.. Thank you #NZ for setting such a caring example.

The long weekend (due to Wellington Anniversary Day) got off to a windy & wet start; our empathy went to the tent campers who accompanied us at Kaitoke Regional Park (📷1). Crossing the Remutaka Range into the Wairarapa, we wandered bustling Greytown & a relatively subdued Martinborough (📷2) before making for the freedom camp at Lake Domain on the northern shore of Wairarapa Moana Wetland. After a quiet night (🅿️ nose into the wind) we called in for treats at Carterton’s deservedly popular Clareville Bakery (📷3), to enjoy later with coffee after a walk/ sandblasting on Riversdale Beach (📷4). At the beach’s northern end we encountered terns, oystercatchers, dotterels, pied stilts & fur seals; the Castlepoint headland loomed on the hazy horizon.

Tararua district caught between anniversary days

This is why in today's modern world we should do away with anniversary days and merge them into one day celebrated over all Aotearoa --- Let us call it Aotearoa day. What date would you put it on? I was thinking 27 December or May 1st.

Beau pays ou j'ai foulé le sol 25 ans après y avoir envoyé un colis. Une des dames ou nous avions loué était étonnée de notre conscience environnemental, surtout le compost. Voir les nouvelles de presque notre antipode donne un autre point de vue. BlackRock’s ‘game changer’ climate fund exits without ever breaking ground

A flagship $2 billion climate infrastructure fund hailed as a breakthrough for New Zealand’s clean energy ambitions is being shut down by BlackRock

Less than three years after being promoted as a model for the world, the fund is closing with no confirmed investments ever publicly disclosed

For the past week four of us from #LincolnUniversityNZ were based at Hinewai Reserve on Banks Peninsula, NZ. We visited a set of monitoring sites in and out of the predator control area of the Predator Free Banks Peninsula project. Predator Free Banks Peninsula is primarily targetting brush-tailed possums at the moment and we're interested in how that is affecting birds, lizards, and invertebrates.

We've been doing this for several years so we're also interested in what the general trends are in these animals in this amazing landscape.

We counted, weighed, and photographed all the lizards in our lizard shelters (mostly geckos). Jennifer Gillette is using the unique patterns on geckos' backs and irises to track individuals over the years.

We also brought in our audio recorders, which monitored birds and, optimistically, bats. Bats haven't officially been detected on Banks Peninsula in decades. There's still hope so we put out bat recorders in several of the areas of oldest forest.

We also brought in our invertebrate pitfall traps.

We've got three more days on the Peninsula this coming week, then we can get stuck into identifying the specimens, processing the data, and finding our what the patterns and trends are.

Max is carrying a box filled with 12 pitfall traps that we've just got from further up in the reserve. We're on the grassy flank of a hillside overlooking Akaroa harbour.A photo of our audio recorder set up. We use two AudioMoths for birds, one set to record in the daytime and the other in the nighttime (so we can record for longer) and there's also a black tubular DOC AR4 recorder which we set to record at higher frequencies to detect any bats that might be present.

It's a rule in New Zealand society that whenever there are two or more people gathered together in a place and somebody says, "How bizarre", the others have to repeat it twice.

Here's the latest variant picture for New Zealand, to early January.

In a chaotic scene, NB.1.8.1 "Nimbus" is being challenged by JN.1.* +DeFLuQE (led by PE.1.4) and XFG.* "Stratus". This scenario raises the risk of rapid reinfections, for those relying on disease-acquired immunity.

BA.3.2.* "Cicada" is also present, but at low frequencies so far.

he thundering majesty of Lady Bowen Falls in the heart of Milford Sound 🌊

Standing at 162 meters, this waterfall is not just a beautiful sight; it actually provides the electricity and water supply for the tiny settlement of Milford Sound. The sheer scale of the falls against the ancient, glacier-carved cliffs of Fiordland National Park is a reminder of the raw power of nature in this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Practical Tip: Most boat cruises will pull right up into the spray of the falls, a tradition known locally as a "Glacial Facial." If you want to keep your camera gear safe and dry for the rest of the trip, make sure you have a waterproof housing or a dry bag ready before the boat gets close. The wind in the fiord can blow the mist much further than you expect! 📸

[2/2] Zealandia in Karori. Water #birds are present here too, as there are a couple of reservoirs within the sanctuary. Examples are the kāruhiruhi | pied shag | Phalacrocorax varius, a.k.a. Australian pied cormorant (📷1) & papango | NZ scaup | Aythya novaeseelandiae, a species of diving duck (📷2). On the forest paths, do look up! The endemic North Island robin | Petroica longipes (📷3) diverged from its South Island cousin before the Pleistocene, according to DNA analyses. Just as we’d given up on getting a good look at a North Island saddleback | Philesturnus rufusater, having heard the distinctive cackle of several, one obliged with a brief appearance (📷4).

P.S. Wait, bird photos? How? Despite the creek dunking the EOS R7 took & visible water residue inside the lens, it seems to be mostly working again!

[1/2] Zealandia in Karori. We’ve probably visited this predator-free ecosanctuary every time we’ve come to Welly. Never have we seen so many tuatara out of their burrows at once, however (📷1). This endemic #reptile (Sphenodon punctatus) is the only surviving species from an order that thrived 200,000,000 years ago; we had the luck to meet one outside of the enclosure & get eye-to-eye with this living relic (📷2). Kākā | Nestor meridionalis is a large endangered parrot readily seen in the skies & around feeders here (📷3). Tūī | Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae may not rival kākā for size despite being one of the largest Australasian honeyeaters (📷4), but they sure do give NZ’s only other endemic honeyeater, the korimako | bellbird | Anthornis melanura—also seen & heard here—stiff competition as bush song meister.
