In 1886 the Police Act established New Zealand's first national, civil, police force.

The original NZ police constabulary was formed to deal with drunken and lawless colonial settlers. Māori had their own independent tikanga to deal with any Māori crime or misconduct.

Now in 2025 #Māori make up about 50% of the #NewZealand prison population while comprising only 15-16% of the total population, making them significantly overrepresented compared to non-Māori. #NZPol
