Three performers in elaborate "Namahage" demon costumes play traditional Japanese taiko drums on a stage. Each performer wears a fierce-looking demon mask—blue, red, and brown—with long hair and straw garments. Two are kneeling and raising clenched fists, while the third stands behind them, mid-drumbeat. I enjoy watching #NHK streaming occasionally, where they play various programs on #Japanese culture.

Just watched most of a piece on the #namahage tradition: scary costumed people (a bit like mummers?) that go house-to-house in the north making scary sounds in primitive costumes terrorizing the children, and getting fed by the parents on new year's eve. Entertaining.

They really scare the hell out of the kids though, holy crap–must be PTSD inducing, trying to put them into sacks and stuff. lol
