I was looking at the invoice for my mooring fees.

It's a price per foot per day.

Sometimes it makes sense that boats pay by the foot, like for blacking (painting) the hull. Or for insurance, … maybe.

But in other cases it doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not entirely sure that licensing a boat should be priced by the foot.

For people who rely on ALT text, let me say that describing the inside of the boat on which I live would be like you describing the inside of the house in which you live. The image shows tons of detail, but I've only named all the main elements.

1. An exterior elevation (side view), of the stern deck and tiller outside. Inside it's a cabin (room) with closets and a bed, followed by a wet room with a curved shower stall and a hot-water radiator, a hall with another radiator, and another cabin (room) with a desk and small radiator, then some swan doors, a kitchen bin, another small radiator, and the start of some kitchen cabinets.

2. An interior plan view (from above without the roof), of the bow deck, hatch and forewell outside, then inside it's the lounge with carpet, sofa, removeable table, footstools, log-burner, and closet, then the kitchen with cabinets, cooktop, sink, fridge, bin and table-storage closet. Next it's a cabin (room) with a rug, bed, and desk along one side. Then there's just a sliver of the toilet. You're all familiar with the concept; this toilet is a drop-through model.

3. Elevation (side view) of 2. In the lounge is a large hot-water radiator. In the kitchen it's a Belfast sink. In the cabin, you can see the washer and dryer under the bed, and some drawers for storage.

4. Exterior elevation (side view from outside), of forewell doors, windows, and on the roof the solar panels, chimney, a plank, and the proverbial barge pole—as in "I wouldn't touch that with a…". (For North Americans, this is the proverbial "ten-foot pole").

When I designed the boat, I painstakingly mocked up the outside and the inside, using Photoshop. (Yes, that's nerdy.)

As the boat evolved, I updated the interiors and exteriors in the design file to reflect every as-built and as-furnished detail.

Now, I've printed the updated image, and plastic-laminated it to withstand touching it as people point out details. Framed, it'll hang on a bulkhead (wall), in the boat.
