COLLEGE SPORTS UNIONIZING?
New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan says all sides need to have their say when it comes to the possibility of the Dartmouth men’s basketball team [unionizing]. In early February, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB.) ruled that the team has a right to hold a union vote, which has the potential to set a new precedent for college sports. Players want more say over practice hours and potential wages. The college on the other hand is against unionization efforts, saying the players are not college employees. At this time, Hassan is declining to take a side. The NLRB has given Dartmouth until March 5th to file its appeal. That is the same day players are scheduled to vote on the unionization plan.

When I was a kid, college sports, officially at least, were amateur. The thought, then, of college sports unionizing seems quite novel.
