Heads up, folks:

Michael Kan reports that National Public Data is back under new owners: pcmag.com/news/site-behind-maj

Here is the direct link to their opt-out page instructions:
nationalpublicdata.com/optout.

I had opted out previously after their humongous #databreach last year. When I checked my name now, it did not find my profile, so if you opted out before, you may still be opted out, but better safe than sorry: check and opt-out if needed.

Every so often, I'll discover that one of my blog posts has gone somewhat viral, and then I have people calling me and emailing me to ask me -- or demand -- that I remove their data from my database or that I add them to the class action lawsuit a post may have reported on.

So following my post on opting out of National Public Data, I now I have some people sending me their personal information and telling me to remove all their data from my database because they want to opt out.

No, folks -- you need to send that to National Public Data. Not to the news blog that reported on it....

So even though I am not in a state that National Public Data recognizes as having a right to OPT-OUT, I sent an OPT-OUT demand to them this morning because the information they had on me that got leaked was a mix of accurate and inaccurate info.

To my surprise, they responded within hours. In their email they wrote, in part:

"We have removed the entire database from our system. We may be required to retain certain records to comply with legal obligations; we will retain your request and our response for our records. Please note that while we are unable to edit or remove third-party data about you, including in public records, we will not sell your personal information through our services."

I hadn't seen anything on their website statement/notice about them removing the database from their system.

Interesting....

Feels like every other week I get letter in the mail from vendor or vendor of a vendor about my data being exfiltrated from their network. Waiting for the letter from National Public Data.

National Public #Data confirms breach exposing Social Security numbers

Looks like #NPD has finally come out and confirmed that at least some of the data leaked came from their systems. They don’t provide much information though.

You’d think they’d be a little more forthcoming, given the situation. But that’s obviously asking for too much.

Reminder: even if your email is found in this breach, it doesn’t necessarily mean your SSN was leaked. A portion of the data is also inaccurate (wrong SSNs to the wrong people, for example) and many people have repeated rows (which may hold inaccurate information.) The data allegedly also includes information of deceased individuals. The data also includes UK and Canadian citizens.

The 2.9 billion records cited in the major news outlets does NOT mean 2.9 billion unique records. There are not 2.9 billion SSNs.
