A Backyard Oasis of #NativePlants Rises from Covid Confinement

A Takoma Park couple turned pandemic seclusion into an opportunity to replace invasive plants with native species, creating a comfortable sanctuary full of color and life. Details are found in the latest Takoma Natives blog from Friends of #NativeTrees in Takoma (FONTT).

Forest floor delights that speak of what grows far above.

A tulip tree bloom, the edges of its petals curled as it dries out, lies open on brown leaf litter on the forest floor. Next to it is a second fragmentary tulip tree bloom. A clump of green violet leaves grows adjacent to the blooms.

#CheshireUK - #Frodsham #rewilding: What happens when a #GolfCourse returns to #nature?

"A former golf course where top footballers once teed off is now home to badgers and foxes after being left to return to nature as part of a rewilding project.

"Frodsham Golf Course in Cheshire closed a few years ago and is now managed by the #WoodlandTrust, who hope to plant about 40,000 #NativeTrees.

"Site manager Neil Oxley says the area will become 'somewhere for people to see nature close to where they live'.

Dairy and/ or biodiversity?
Shadeless ungulates cook at extreme temperatures

"Even for the “greenest” dairy farmer, however, strong convictions about the morality of using land for food production will limit how much native biodiversity is acceptable on farm." >>
theconversation.com/most-nz-da

"Globally, agriculture is a dominant land use, with approximately 40% of the Earth's ice-free land managed by farmers and herders...When natural habitats are cleared for agriculture, most native biodiversity is lost...Habitat loss and fragmentation are compounded by the impacts of chemical inputs, invasive species and climate change on what little native biodiversity remains in agricultural landscapes... There are increasing calls to incorporate native biodiversity into farming systems." >>

Red cedars and more than a dozen other native fir trees in the Pacific Northwest are dying as their ranges move uphill in response to warming temperatures caused by climate change. The die-off is also affecting Douglas firs, the region's most important commercial tree species.

A community-owned wind farm in the Outer Hebrides is funding a project to plant at least a million native trees on crofts by 2030. So far, 211,000 trees have been planted on 245 crofts to create small woods, promoting nature restoration and biodiversity.
+
The initiative is primarily funded by profits from the UK's largest community-owned wind farm near Stornoway. It generates £900,000 annually from three 3MW wind turbines. These profits are reinvested into local community projects, including the ambitious reforestation initiative.
+
This green energy project has already helped establish three new tree nurseries on the islands.
+
Crofters are in charge of planting on their own land, working with project advisors and forestry experts. The new woodlands feature a variety of species including alder, hazel, birch, rowan, and Scots pine. Some crofters have even included fruit orchards in their plantings.

Today’s Mayacamas native tree is the Knobcone Pine (Pinus attenuata). Sometimes known as Fire Pines. Shown are a pair of cones on a 7 year old tree that reseeded after the 2017 Nuns Canyon fire. They are very well adapted to fire. The cones open up at around 350 degrees and drop their seeds as a fire comes through. The trees are goblet shaped, and live to be around 60 years old and then fall apart. Well adapted to a 30-50 year Chaparral fire return interval. They are tricky (read: dangerous) to take down with a chainsaw as the goblet shape makes their center of gravity hard to figure out. Also the cones are very sharp and nasty if you get hit with one. #NativeTrees

Hoo hoo. Kauri protection people said it doesn’t look like kauri dieback. Poor tree is still in bad shape. #wellington #NewZealand #nativetrees

We have a very unhappy kauri tree at work. I have emailed MPI and VUW kauri dieback lab.. hopefully it is just the dry summer we had in #wellington. Ground is also very dry and brown. #NewZealand #nativetrees

Douglas fir "bloom". There was a puff of pollen when I moved the branch too.

A cone growing on a douglas fir, it is redish in color, it is at the tip of a small branch with needles. It is the female part of the fir tree that will produce seeds. on the left partially visible is a pollen producing part.

Technically, probably not a "flower" or a "bloom" but it takes the pollen and makes seeds!

Today, we are celebrating this year’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) #ForestDay #IntlForestDay theme ‘Forests and Innovation’. Thank you to all our authors and reviewers who continue to help us plant #nativetrees in the UK, and preserve and restore #ancientwoodland. forest.biologists.com/landscap

Scenes from tree planting on the mountain in 2023. A steep slope and a riparian area will now be full of native plants. These hillsides had been threatened by takeover from invasive weeds & invasive trees. Species planted include oak, hickory, willow, sycamore, dogwood, redbud, spicebush, hornbeam, buttonbush, black gum, paw paw, persimmon, river birch, ninebark, and serviceberry.

Happy New Year!

Close-up of green tree tubes in the foreground, sloping down to a distant plateau with still more tree tubes on the slope, ending at the edge of a forest.Seen from a distance, a view of tree tubes spilling down a slope into a ravine around a stream. It's hard to see the stream from here, it's a dark line, which is also defined by an old cattle fence that kept the cows out of the stream.

If your supply of active hope is in need of replenishing, plant things.

Today Naas Biodiversity Group planted its third pocket forest, with 1,310 native trees:

🌳400 Whitethorn
🌳400 Birch
🌳170 Scots Pine
🌳150 Oak
🌳95 Rowan
🌳50 Hazel

A great sense of community spirit and #Meitheal 🌱

"Months after Cyclone Gabrielle smashed Tairāwhiti, locals are still cleaning up the damage. The Side Eye travels to the erosion-prone region to meet the people asking hard questions about a plan for the future."

A fantastic visual guide to the tension in #newzealand between planting pine forests for short-term gain and #nativetrees for the future.
