Here's a skirt I printed for a friend using rusty metal and tea. I'm quickly becoming obsessed with this method.

In other RUST news: I've been looking around the alleys for a free rusty chain for a while, for my projects. Doing a chore on the side of my house only accessed through the neighbour's, I just found a long rusty chain that has been here for decades on my own property! Just had to cut it off the neighbour's gate.
Now to figure out how to get it to meander charmingly across a shawl and stay in place inside a bundle. Going to clean this up and print it today!
Yesterday I bundled some things with rusty metal and boiled them in tea. Here's a t-shirt that previously had a too-pale ecoprint but now it looks pretty rad! And sock yarn that I left in the leftover tea overnight. I'm becoming obsessed with this process.
🍍 International researchers have developed a way to dye clothing using discarded pineapple peel - an approach they say can help upcycle food waste and provide a more sustainable option.

I love what happens when you shove fabric all crumpled into the indigo vat and let it sit there for a while. I put this piece of cotton bedsheet in before the Arsenal-Leicester match started and took it out at half time 😍
Finally started the quilting on the coat I've been working on for a very long time now. This whole process has been so slow and I want to be wearing it already.
I'm using the Cris Wood Sews throw jacket pattern, with a lining and a very thin, very warm wool batting.
Linen for the exterior is thrifted, dyed by me with indigo, various tannins, and a little bit of rust. Quilted with cotton sashiko thread also dyed with indigo.

Here's that dress I dyed last week. It was sprinkled with rusty rings and washers, bundled up and boiled in strong tea. The oxide and tannin react to produce the greys and blacks, and a few rings printed rust colour where the tea didn't penetrate, down in the ruffle which was rolled to the inside.
My partner says that the area around the diaphragm, where the symmetry is most obvious, is where everyone can gaze and see their favourite Pokémon.

This week's dye test strips. Lines are painted with thickened mordant: alum acetate at bottom, ferrous acetate at top, and four blends of the two in between. The dyes we used, from left to right: onion skins, marigold flowers, avocado pits and skins, and ground eupatorium. We're slowly making a book of colour samples for teaching.
I've also got a dress in the leftover eupatorium dye, and later will process all the dye leftovers into lake pigments for making ink.
Our all-natural Logwood dye is restocked. I'm absolutely in love with this rich purple hue.

Just a few hours in, and I can already see some color! Walnuts produce a rich brown shade, with darkness depending on the dye-to-fabric ratio. This is when I get really excited!

Here's a peek behind the scenes of my natural dye process. This giant pot is filled with walnuts. Now, we wait and see what develops. I'll keep you updated!

Get it before it's gone! These are the last of the lighter Logwood fabrics I dyed last year. The new batch doesn't have the same light grey-ish purple feel to it, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to make more. Currently in Aida, Lugana, Belfast Linen.

@colinpurrington I didn't know there was a Gall Week! That's so cool. Turns out I took pictures of galls anyway but it hadn't occured to me to put them on inaturalist. Thanks!
This might be of interest to #ink / #InkMaking and #dye / #NaturalDye people-- lots of us are out looking for galls this time of year for tannin reasons.

@Axiom @fiberarts considering I'll soon be regularly getting these things falling on my head & arms for a few months, this is a nice looking reminder of a future use of said plant part.
Mostly though I'll likely be dying fibers for handmade paper not hand spun yarn.
Before and after dyeing this skein of #HandSpunYarn .
The yarn is 4-ply sport weight, 50% Wool 25% Alpaca 25% Satin Angora
Dyed with black walnut hulls #naturalDye . I boiled the hulls twice, then placed the bath in a shady spot and soaked the yarn for three days.
This was a test dye for a larger project. I love the color, but I'm not sure it's right for this project. I'll decide after knitting a test swatch.
