Here is a demo showing how such software produces a human voice.

Nachdem leider das Netzteil rechtzeitig zur Führung kaputtgegangen war, läuft die #NeXTstation wieder. Es hat den MOSFET zerrissen. #datArena #vclab #vintagecomputing

I swear I remember using Mosaic on a #NeXTStation in 1994. But I certainly can't find a copy anywhere.

Thinking of NEXTSTEP this morning...I'd guess many aren't aware of the unusual color display arrangement.

The NeXTstation, which was the first "affordable" color solution for NEXTSTEP, has a 16-bit framebuffer, but instead of rendering the desktop in 65,536 colors (as per Windows or Mac hardware, say), it rendered in 12-bit color with 4-bits of alpha channel (transparency).

That means it had a palette of 4096 colors, with all colors available at once on the display (not like, say, the Amiga or Apple IIgs with a 4096 color palette, but video modes with a small subset of those colors available (yes, yes, HAM mode excluded). Additionally, anything on the screen had 16 levels of opacity available.

It's interesting to see in person, on the actual hardware (especially on a good LCD display). With dithering, it looks very close to 24-bit truecolor.

(The NeXT Dimension color board for the Cube allowed 24-bit color with 8-bits alpha, but that was not so frequently used -- less so than most NeXT hardware even...)

But that's not nearly the weirdest that NEXTSTEP-capable hardware got, when it came to color video display...

Does anybody know if there are technical drawings of the #NeXTstation case (and other devices, too) available?

I had a weird half-active non-membership at my local makerspace that I finally made complete today. While waiting around to get my orientation, I discovered TWO NEXTSTATIONS just kind of chilling out in the “hey someone do something with these” area next to a C64 with an attached VIC-1541. Damn it, they got me 😔

Sorry about all the hashtags to follow, but I feel like the people need to know.

it’s a pizzabox nextstation with the monitor! honestly it’s a really bad photo, and a casual glance would just give you “black computer with CRT”

Well, after weeks of making "educated" guesses based on old usenet posts and playing around with video timing generators, today I finally busted out the oscilloscope and took measurements to define a custom input resolution and get my NeXTStation Color recognized by the $30 new-old-stock video switcher/scaler I purchased (a Kramer VP-728)

A screen capture from the video scaler in question, showing an OpenStep desktop in the background, and in the foreground, a “Custom Input” OSD from the switcher with the following values:

HT Horizontal Total                 1645

HW Horizontal sync pulse width      144

HS Horizontal active start point    453

HA Horizontal active region         1120

HP Horizontal polarity              -

VT Vertical Total                   898

VW Vertical sync pulse width        8

VS Vertical active start point      57

VA Vertical active region           832

VP Vertical polarity                -

⬛📦 Our NeXTstation Turbo lives! 😍 The screen needs some repair because it displays a very dark image with some lines at the top, but the system boots up nicely. An impressive beast from 1990 with 32 MB of RAM!

I love that Steve Jobs chose to include a video of a colonoscopy being performed as part of the NEXTTIME (NeXT's answer to QuickTime video) install CD's demo videos.

And there was silly Microsoft over there, putting lame old Weezer and Edie Brickell music videos on their Windows 95 CD lol!

Great success with the #NeXTstation with the microSD in place of a hard disk. Was able to back up the card it came with and restore it to a different card to confirm the image works.

Then loaded #NeXTSTEP 2.0, 3.3, and 4.2 clean images into different cards and confirm it boots off all of 'em. Gonna be great for learning and for showing at #VCFsoutheast!

Great news: the #NeXTstation that got lost in the mail finally arrived a month later, and it looks and works great!

My Turbo #NeXTstation firmware ROM Rev. 3.3 (V74) hack modifies the system to run at 68 Hz instead of 72 Hz VSync when an ADB keyboard is connected (68 Hz are used when a non-ADB keyboard is connected). This enables the use of modern LCD screens which are often not too happy to sync to a 72 Hz refresh rate. It's a two-byte hack (two modified conditional branch opcodes – one to disable the ROM checksum and one to avoid setting the 72 Hz refresh) 😀.

Looking through old files this weekend, stumbled across a flier for the 1990 introduction of the NeXTstation. Those were some great academic discounts ($2,000 discount from the $4,995 base model list price)!

Clearly enough to tempt, since I kept the flier. But not enough for me to pull the trigger: I stuck with a borrowed ‘030 NeXTcube for a while longer (until the 33MHz turbo models were introduced).

NeXT pamphlet introducing the NeXTstation and NeXTstation Color.Front side of a one page flier saying:

"Come take the NeXT Step

NeXT Users Group Meeting
3:30 pm. Wednesday, September 19
Room 306 Parrington Hall

Topics to include recent product announcements:

NeXT Station [sic]
NeXT Station Color
NeXT Dimension Color Board
Lotus Improve
much more…”Back side of a one page flier listing product numbers and prices for various NeXTstation configurations, starting with the NeXTstation 8MB (RAM) 105MB (hard drive) for $4,995 (with a Higher Ed Advance Commitment price of $2,995) and going up through the 32MB RAM, 340MB hard drive configuration that listed for $10,275 (discount price $7,745).

(Try converting those prices from 1990 dollars to today’s dollars!)
