went back to , for some , it’s the tail end of the good crabbing season and after stormy conditions the day before we only got 5 keepers, yet the weather was gorgeous and the shells were full of meat good eatin’!

View from a boat on a sunny day in the southern end of Netarts Bay, OR. The waters are calm, and perspective is looking at the hills on the southern rim of the bay, and past the view of the boat’s passenger windshield and my arm a small part of the Netarts Spit is visible. Two dungeness crabs inside of a crab trap are brought aboard the boat, ready to be inspected for sex and size, as only male crabs of a certain width are permissible to keep with a recreational shellfish license.Me, dressed for the unexpectedly warm and sunny weather wearing a life jacket, preparing to shake out a cast of crabs from the trap and back into the bay. These crabs were all either too small or females. Behind me is the Oregon mainland, the eastern ridge of Netarts Bay.

went out to early yesterday morning, we ended up getting two limits of 24 huge dungeness crabs that were bigger than our crab gauge! 4 traps and 1 ring (other ring’s rope broke on the harness. it was freezing at 30° initially, but it was real nice once the sun came out. Made for good eating!

A view from a boat containing crab traps on an early, clear morning on Netarts Bay facing south towards the end of the bay where the hilly Oregon coast rests. It is rising tide, so the sandbars are disappearing under the calm waters. In the distance, a colony of sea lions basking in the warmth of the sunrise on a sandbar in the freezing morning. It is rising tide, so the sea lions will soon return to the water.Overhead view of about half a dozen very large dungeness crabs (the largest of them was maybe a foot wide) stacked atop of each other, alive, in a tall bucket. On a small plate lie cleaned and cooked dungeness crab, legs and pincers still connected to the abdomen. Inside the shell contains small amounts of sweet, melt-in-your-mouth meat. Also on the plate are a fork and butter knife for extracting the meat, and a set of pliers to crack the crab shell.
