I think what a lot of people forget after reading a couple "popular science" books is that even when written by respected scientists with all the right credentials, a lot of it, ESPECIALLY in the field of #neuroscience , is still just THEORIES. Well-researched theories, but only theories.

UK academics say latest chemicals are ‘wake-up call’ and urge global action to stop weaponisation of neuroscience

Sophisticated and deadly 'brain weapons' that can attack or alter human consciousness, perception, memory or behaviour are no longer the stuff of science fiction, two British academics argue.

Michael Crowley and Malcolm Dando, of Bradford University, are about to publish a book that they believe should be a wake-up call to the world.

They are this weekend travelling to The Hague for a key meeting of states, arguing that the human mind is a new frontier in warfare and there needs to be urgent global action to prevent the weaponisation of neuroscience.

'It does sound like science fiction,' said Crowley. 'The danger is that it becomes science fact.'

The book, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, explores how advances in neuroscience, pharmacology and artificial intelligence are coming together to create a new threat.

The book makes the case for a new 'holistic arms control' framework, rather than relying on existing arms control treaties. It sets out a number of practical steps that could be taken, including establishing a working group on CNS-acting and broader incapacitating agents. Other proposals concern training, monitoring and definitions."

My just-turned-13 year old has complained in the last few weeks of feeling a deep sense of #DejaVu regularly, and how much it weirds him out. We've talked about it and in discussing it, I realised that I was also kind of plagued by that when I was around the same age as him, but that slowly over time I stopped getting it so much.

Now I dont think there is anything mystical or magical at all with Deja Vu, but know that is just an odd quirk of the human brain. Im wondering though if there are studies that have been done that show that it is more prevalent in developing teenage/young adult brains? Like could it be, that with all those new connections being made in their noggins, things go awry more often, and generate that odd deja-vu sensation?

Any #psychology / #neurology buffs or boffins out there that have heard of this?

Basic Consciousness in Birds

“Behavioral and neurophysiological data suggest that some bird species are aware of external stimuli and recognize themselves to varying degrees in the mirror. Despite large differences in the general brain organization between birds and mammals, the requirements for consciousness as outlined in Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNWT) and Recurrent Processing Theory (RPT) seem to be mostly met.”

“The presented results add to the growing body of evidence that consciousness may be present in many parts of the animal kingdom, across species that are phylogenetically distant from each other and have remarkably different brain structures. It is certainly too early to speculate whether this is the result of convergent evolution or results from a distant common ancestor, but if so many animals with such diverse brain organisations are conscious, it becomes increasingly likely that consciousness adds cognitive abilities that are evolutionarily successful.”
