The French archipelago has large #nickel reserves, which are essential for electric cars. #France therefore wants to preserve the strategic area, with major consequences for both #biodiversity and the original inhabitants, the #Kanak. Bram Vermeulen investigates these tensions for #VPRO Frontline.

While #Europe seeks a green revolution, New Caledonia's nickel industry causes large-scale environmental #pollution and threatens the island's unique biodiversity. The effects of "mining are visible everywhere: excavated mountaintops, ruined mangroves. What was once a tropical paradise is slowly turning into a barren moonscape.

For the Kanak, the original inhabitants of New Caledonia, the consequences are even more dire. Their dependence on fishing is threatened by toxic “zones du mort” in the mangroves, caused by waste from the mines and refineries. Ironically, the nickel plants are powered by #coal and largely owned by foreign companies, including French parties. …"

“Looking south from La Siesta beach”

La Siesta beach is the very last beach in the commune of Le Mont-Dore, at the end of Plum Bay, on the road to the south of New Caledonia.

It's a brown-sand beach, bordered by a reef bed.

Pirogues River is a major river of southwestern New Caledonia. It flows into the sea at Pirogues Bay.

The Pirogues River is one of the largest rivers in the Grand Sud, and one of Caledonians' favorite bathing spots.

“Laterite landscape”

In the deep south of New Caledonia, laterite is a brick-red soil resulting from the weathering of an iron-bearing rock.

One hundred and twenty years of open-pit mining have left large, gaping, reddish wounds in the landscape, destroying the beauty of the landscapes, polluting rivers, water catchments and the lagoon, and multiplying the risk of landslides.

Long considered an integral part of the mining industry essential for development, environmental degradation was only really a concern and authorities only really became a concern in the early 1970s, just after the nickel boom.

“Prony: a corvette, a bay, a village”

The Prony Corvette was launched in 1847. It was a wooden ship with mixed sail and steam propulsion.

Stationed in Brazil and La Plata in 1850, then decommissioned, the Prony was assigned in 1853 to the naval division responsible for claiming the territory of New Caledonia for France.

The Prony corvette sailed along the coast of New Caledonia, and the Bay of Prony, in the south of the island, was named after her.

An establishment of the Bagne de Nouvelle-Calédonie, known as Camp Sebert, was set up there. After the penal colony closed, families of miners employed in ore extraction occupied the buildings.

Treasure hunters can still be found here, as it is said that a convict who was happy to gamble died here without disclosing the hiding place for his booty, located somewhere in the village…

“Crossing paths with a blue-lipped sea krait”

The fauna of New Caledonia is diverse, and for the most part endemic. Among the fifteen or so species of sea snake found in the lagoon, the sea krait is New Caledonia's most famous snake.

The sea krait is a snake that can be described as amphibious: it goes into the sea to hunt moray eels and conger eels, and then returns to land to digest, rest and lay eggs.

Three species of sea kraits cohabit New Caledonia, including this blue-lipped sea krait. It is found throughout the Pacific Ocean and in the northern Indian Ocean.

The sea krait is venomous. Its deadly venom is reputed to be ten times more potent than that of the King Cobra. Fortunately, sea krait is not aggressive and bites are very rare.

“Tiny islet Îlot Leroue in New Caledonia lagoon”

Îlot Leroue is a tiny islet bordered by a coral reef, located in New Caledonia's large southern lagoon.

It's an entirely natural site, less frequented than other islets closer to Nouméa. Snorkelers will particularly appreciate the preserved reef drop-off, where numerous fish, turtles and coral sharks can be seen.

“Sainte-Marie bay from Ouen Toro”

Ouen Toro is a hill on the southernmost tip of the Nouméa peninsula in New Caledonia. It rises to an altitude of 132 meters and covers 63 hectares.

The hill overlooks the bay of Sainte-Marie, which belongs to the commune of Nouméa, capital of New Caledonia.

There are three Sainte-Marie islets: the islet Sainte-Marie (or Grand Sainte-Marie or île N'Géa), the islet Uéré (or Petit Sainte-Marie) and the smaller islet N'Do.
