- John Mastodon is a man of myth and legend who takes on many inspirational forms, but none of them involve corporeal reality.
- Nicole, sometimes John's significant other of various types, was a very eager spam bot in better times, and fondly recalled by many these days as the Fediverse Chick (which they called themselves).
This all applies specifically to Mastodon, and you are likely also talking to folks on not-Mastodon without knowing it.

A feature I don’t recall seeing outside the #Fediverse: #Elk, among other #Mastodon UIs, has #Wellbeing features aimed at lowering stress levels.
Y'know a lot of people pop up during any of these migrations, loudly claiming to be some oppressed minority, totally not being paid by big centralized corporate social networks to scare people away from the Fediverse, and they all say basically the same thing:
1) The Fediverse is full of persecution of said minority
2) Said minority has been attacked here and driven away, but protected and defended on centralized corporate networks (even when they're not)
3) Frame everything as if the minority is an identity you must embrace that makes everyone else an unwelcome outsider.
4) Heavy implications that the people programming the Fediverse are doing this on purpose
5) The only solution is totalitarian control to make sure nobody's allowed to be mean, which conveniently can only be done by the centralized corporate networks
Not saying they're full of shit, and fearmongering to persecute the minority they claim to defend, but watch out for this sort of thing. Someone saying they're oppressed does not mean they are oppressed. (Quite the opposite really. Oppressed people tend to be bullied into silence.)

Some tips to you get rolling:
1. Before you follow folks, have your avatar/bio in place. This helps with trust.
2. Write an introduction post and include the hashtag #Introduction (and others relevant to you and your interests).
3. If you get lost, just ask. We are helpful.
4. Use ALT text. Always.

If you're #NewHere on Mastodon and you're a soccer/football fan, I recommend following a number of hashtags, most notably, #FediFC and #mastodonfc
Following hashtags is a great way to meet like-minded people. If you follow a particular hashtag, anyone who uses it will show up in your home feed, whether you follow them or not.
Took me a little while to get my bearings on this platform, but I love it here. I hope you will too.
