Rather than going home (and probably collapsing back into bed today, i've headed to the beach for a coffee. Strong southerly - just about getting blown away. Lovely day though. #ocean #coffee #BarBeach #beach #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

We had coffee afterwards and i was unable to resist an affogato with vanilla gelato. #coffee #cafe #affogato #CarringtonNSW #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Glass with a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla gelato sitting in a black saucer on a light wooden table.

Here's one of the older buildings, a stand alone terrace style house, with a restored advertising sign on its side. #NewcastleHarbour #CarringtonNSW #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Light grey terrace style house with a big verandah with black wrought iron lace railings. On the side of the upper story, there's an ad for Dr Morse's Indian Root Pills in white on a blue background with "for the liver" written in red underneath.

Had a walk round Carrington which is a kind of peninsula jutting out into Newcastle Harbour. Bit of an industrial view, here near the port. Next time, i'll get some pics of the lovely old houses and gardens too. #NewcastleHarbour #CarringtonNSW #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Looking across the water from Carrington to Kooragang. The building on the left (Carrington side) is part of port loading facilities for ships. On Kooragang, it's also an industrial landscape (coal loading and other facilities/businesses, with generating some white cloud. Sky and water are grey.Looking down at and along the rail lines that run by the harbour near Carrington. Taken from a foot bridge that runs above the lines. Can see glimpses of harbour water on the left. And freight train carriages to the left and right of empty tracks.

Enjoyed a very unusual and clever Halloween show, 'Send in the clowns' last night. Produced by my friend Ross Brown with Sally Novak in the cast. #Halloween #Theatre #NewcastleNSW

Afterwards, headed for a swim. And bumped into a fellow craftivist there. Small world. #ocean #swim #MerewetherBaths #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Looking southwards along the back wall at dusk while swimming in the main pool. The water catches the fading light and looks silky. The sky pale blue but full of white puffy clouds. Below it, the shadowed coastline stretches along the horizon.

The view from lunch today, King Edward's Park in Newcastle NSW. It's a tough life. Also seen from lunch:

· paragliders
· pelicans gliding
· lots of crows (Aussie ravens)
· nankeen kestrel stuck to a spot in space
· peewees dogfighting unseen insects
· noisy miners and magpies "just checking"
· whales jumping

A curved stone wall along a roadway, enclosing an empty garden, surrounded by greenery with a couple of hoop pines. Blue Sky with scattered cloud above, blue sea in the distance.

Had a great morning out learning to kayak. Muscles very sore now and managed to rub a sore spot on my thumb. So glad i had a go. #RisingTideAus #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Looking towards shore at Horseshoe Beach with people in bright yellow and grey inflatable kayaks in the water and people up on the sandy beach. Sunny day, light layer of cloud across the blue.A big coal ship coming in to Newcastle harbour with Nobbys to the right and a tug boat to its left. We're in the water kayaking when i took the shot. The black end of the paddle is visible bottom right.Looking along Horseshoe Beach towards Nobbys just before all the kayak training started. Sunny blue sky day.

Yesterday we caught trains to Warrabrook and trekked to a favourite Asian grocery supplier, EIG Cash and Carry. Except it was closed and it appears to be permanently. 💔

We loved EIG, it had a pretty good range of products, for Newcastle. It was essentially a wholesaler that had some retail shelves down one side of the warehouse and pallets of instant noodles and student happiness near the entrance. University of Newcastle is just across the train lines, so there were always students buying happiness there.

Sadly, it has the look of permanent closure now.

So, we trekked up to the shopping centre to use the loos, and caught the number 47 bus to Hunter Street where AKK is. From there, off to Uncle Dan's to get some wine, and a walk through to Indian food on Darby Street. The plan for the day suffered some damage, but rallied around at the finish.

Only a small number of works to see at the partially reopened art gallery but some absolute gems. #art #MargaretOlley #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Painting of Newcastle Harbour - showing the beauty of a very industrial city. Shows the view when the BHP steelworks were still in operation with commercial vessels on the water which is shimmering with light.Still life by Margaret Olley. This one has orange and blue flowers in a wicker vase/pot, green vases and green lemons (with only a hint of yellow).

The colour of the water was so intense and fresh. #ocean #coffee #MerewetherBeach #beach #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

The ocean around the rocks at the southern end of Merewether Beach: such intense shades of blue and blue-green. A surfer and friend are walking towards the right over the rocks. Not sure if leaving after a good surf or repositioning to a different spot off the rocks.

Took my aunty out for a drive round the beaches and the lake today, with some stops along the way for walks, lunch and people watching. Aunty doesn't get out as much these days after giving up driving for health reasons. These pics were taken at the Cowrie Hole beach, between Nobbys and the Newcastle Ocean Baths. #ocean #walk #NewcastleOceanBaths #CowrieHole #NobbysBeach #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Looking southwards over the Cowrie Hole beach towards the Ocean Baths and the ocean horizon. It is low tide, exposing more of the small sandy beach and the natural rocky platform that stretches out about 20 metres before the white line of breaking waves is visible.Looking northward over the Cowrie Hole Beach to Nobbys headland and the adjacent harbour breakwater. Lots of rock pools exposed by the tide. This area is also an important sea bird habitat which makes it extra annoying to see so many people letting their dogs roam off leash there (not even meant to be allowed on leash on the beach FFS).
