This year’s senior class is the first to have spent nearly its entire college career in the age of generative AI, a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, like text and images. As the technology improves, it’s harder to distinguish from human work, and it’s shaking academia to its core. Special correspondent Fred de Sam Lazaro reports for our series, Rethinking College.

Did you have the misfortune of getting caught in Saturday night’s traffic nightmare along Marcos Highway? It’s one palpable sign of the holiday season — when battle-scarred Metro Manilans still get jarred by how bad traffic could get. In 2023, in fact, we were judged the world’s slowest metro area to drive in. Read about it here.

Lest I sound like a party pooper, we must celebrate what needs celebrating: the victory of Filipinos who pushed back against the Marcos administration’s wanton and callous transfer of public health funds to the national treasury in 2024. In a unanimous decision released on Friday, December 5, the Supreme Court ordered the government to return some P60 billion to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth).

It’s a win for every Filipino, said the petitioners in a statement.

Majority of the justices also declared “unconstitutional” a special provision in the 2024 General Appropriations Act which then-finance secretary Ralph Recto invoked as <a href="https://www.rappler.com/philippines/recto-philh

In case you missed it, the House of Representatives suspended Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga on Monday, December 1, for “reckless, offensive, and irresponsible use of his social media platform.”

The neophyte lawmaker was suspended for 60 days, which his colleagues in Congress said would result in a “more severe” disciplinary action should he be found to repeat similar misconduct. He was ordered to remove 24 social media posts that supposedly belittled women, undermined the government, and potentially incited to sedition, according to a complaint filed by his former party mates at the National Unity Party.

Back in October, The Nerve investigated Barzaga’s social media behavior. We worked on this piece with journalist Regine Cabato, where we detailed how Barzaga grew his online following through a deliberate “shitposting” strategy – a style that uses provocative language, memes, and sometimes misleading content. We found that Barzaga’s posts were often amplified by supporters of the Duterte fa

There’s a quiet revolution taking place in different parts of the world. Newsrooms that used to see each other as mortal enemies are coming together a la Avengers.

In France, 80 French news outlets banded together to create a platform, Independent Media Portal, that aggregates their stories into one space. In Canada, various newsrooms created Unrigged, which also aggregates their content into one digital space.

In the Philippines, the Philippine Press Institute (PPI), came up with something similar, the PPI News Commons, which centralizes the articles of its member newsrooms into one page.

If I called this a revolution, what is it rising up against?

The answer: social media feeds that make it harder and harder to find journalism.

These social media feeds that have been the top source of news and information for 90% of internet-using Filipinos have changed the way we are accessing journalism.

Because of this served-to-you approach, most of us go on Facebook and wait for news to come to us. That worked for a while: news articles would reliably appear on our feeds. It was behavior similar to turning on the radio, or switching to a TV news program.

But now, Meta’s algorithms and Google’s AI Overviews, make it less likely we’ll read or find journalism if we just wait for it to

Thousands of Filipinos across key cities mounted their second wave of national protests against corruption on Sunday, November 30, coinciding with the birth anniversary of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio. Like the tumultuous times that shaped Bonifacio, the current days of rage are bursting with anger, impatience, and a sense of foreboding. Will this three-year-old government last? Should it?

Marcos, Duterte resign — is the battlecry of a chunk of the leftist movement that trooped to Luneta and Mendiola on Sunday. In Recto, supporters of the Duterte family screamed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should step down, but not Vice President Sara Duterte. At the People Power Monument in EDSA, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said the nation is not yet ready for a “resign all” call. Paterno Esmaquel II expounds on the Cardinal’s stand here. “Nanlumo ako (I was disheartened),&#8

"Individuals trying to support themselves via subscriptions are as dependent on the whims of the marketplace as those working for large corporations, and it’s not just the lack of health care and 401ks that make the career of a patron-supported creator precarious — it’s the rawness and immediacy of the relationship."

Every year, our lean climate team covers the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP — remotely or otherwise — because we believe in its significance in bringing nations together to tackle one of the major challenges of our time.

Because COPs always happen every November or December, covering this annual summit has — unintentionally — become a culmination of sorts of Rappler’s coverage of the Philippines’ climate and environmental issues over the past year. After working on local (sometimes, hyperlocal) stories from January to October, we turn our eyes to COP before the year ends to see whether world leaders will make more ambitious commitments this time (in terms of climate adaptation and finance, among others) that would trickle down to communities most affected by climate change.

That is the hope, at least, and after 30 years of climate conferences, it has also become the expectation.

However, outcomes out of COP30 — “widely seen as a litmus test for turning decades of climate pledges into action,” as the UN itself puts it — were not just <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b77eJkw57z6vjsZTJYnDpehQsqv3EWad/edit?fbclid=IwY2xjawOQ_RBleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFwQlh2WnA0d3pMaDVDcnRQc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHtIswiIKbI0SO

We remember the day of infamy, November 23, 2009, when warlords from Maguindanao and their private army mowed down 58 Filipino journalists and media workers in the worst peacetime killing of journalists in history.

The Maguindanao massacre 16 years ago was an attack “on the very idea that citizens deserve to know,” said the Cagayan de Oro Press Club in a statement commemorating the killings. Today’s raging flood control scandal emanates from the same culture of impunity and entitlement that led to the massacre, said the Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao. The families of the victims still await compensation.

Because of the sheer magnitude of the crime, the primary suspects, the Ampatuans, were eventually jailed — their mansions raided, their assets frozen. But for the most part, public officials get away with nearly everything in this country.

Best proof of this is resigned Ako Bicol representative Zaldy Co, the new poster boy of the anti-Marcos movement
