latest #nixos has trouble switching between screen resolution (modes?) on my machine; the graphics stack will lock up and i'll be unable to recover it

had dinner with the leadership of Antithesis https://antithesis.com/ today, and learned that their engineers go hard on #nixos and that they're hiring. the deterministic build is part of their obsession with simulated and distributed deterministic testing.

they asked "where should we go to let engineers know we exist and what we're working on"... and what I've told them:

1. Create a fedi instance, don't push or sell a damn thing, but just share... give it to your engineers, not your marketing team
2. Advertise jobs on fedi and hashtag nixos too given you are a major user and major contributor
3. Sponsor events like #emfcamp but don't send sales people or buy adverts, just sponsor the event, send engineers who want to go, donate extra tickets to the community

gist though... Antithesis is good, but not many people know about it, go to where the likely users and future engineers are, don't sell to them, just let them know you exist

Minimal #NixOS VM base config, for when I want to quickly spin up something disposable to reproduce a problem.

After writing something similar two or three times, I figured it was time to do the job properly and commit it somewhere I'd find it next time I go looking.

#Nixos is there a way to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH per user?

I tried via environment.sessionVariables.LD_LIBRARY_PATH inside users.users.user but it says users.users.user.environment doesn't exist.

('user' = the stand-in username because I plan to do this with muiltiple users)

Today's #nixos question: how do I configure remote builders download the dependencies and ship the result to me?

That is, I have a fast remote builder setup at home, also inside my tailscale network, but I'm at a distant location.

So I'm downloading dependencies over slow wifi, uploading them over tailscale, and the results will return to me when finished.

Is there some way to configure my remote builder to download dependencies and ship them to me when finished? Can I toggle by location?

It's the weird cases where #NixOS shines. I've been a bit sick lately and wanted to replay an old game (Baldur's Gate II). It depends on openssl 1.0.x . Pretty much no modern distro ships that (for good reasons).

In other distros there's a few paths:
* Compile the lib yourself, override LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the built dir
* Build/use a binary package, hope for the best and pollute your system with super old shared crypto library

NixOS let me builld + inject it for Lutris/game itself.

ooh nixos is neat. using a flake to install Zen browser natively instead of using flatpak.

there are many flakes for this though, wonder if I'm using the right one?

Trying to package a font; why is this happening?

Today I installed Qbz, a native Linux Qobuz client that provides better sound quality than the browser. It isn't available in nixpkgs so I had to install the tarball manually and I only went and flipping did it. Wasn't anywhere near as challenging as I thought it would be and now I have a lovely new music player. I love #nixos

I just solved most of my RAM issues using:
`zramSwap.enable = true` on #NixOS

Wow oh wow. Any strategies for how to manage OpenSnitch on NixOS? It's a cool tool but the constant popups for everything that connects to the internet is just... a lot.

And, unfortunately, because of how nix works, each rule I allow via the popup assigns the /nix/store binary path to the rule, so I don't expect the rules to survive a rebuild.

I've already used it to strip out all of the advertising domains, and my next target is for blocking AI slop domains. For that alone is worth it.

I feel like I’m missing something super simple here but I’ve installed abcde and libopus along with libopusenc. When trying to encode with abcde to opus, say it can’t find the lib. What am I missing? #NixOS
