"As Texas wildfires burned toward the nation’s primary nuclear weapons facility, workers hurried to ensure nothing flammable was around buildings and storage areas.

"When the fires showed no sign of slowing, #Pantex Plant officials urgently called on local contractors, who arrived within minutes with bulldozers to dig trenches and enlarge fire breaks for the sprawling complex where nuclear weapons are assembled and disassembled and dangerous plutonium pits — hollow spheres that trigger nuclear warheads and bombs — are stored.

" 'The winds can pick up really (quickly) here and can move really fast,' said Jason Armstrong, the federal field office manager at Pantex, outside Amarillo, who was awake 40 hours straight monitoring the risks. Workers were sent home and the plant shut down when smoke began blanketing the site.

"Those fires in February — including the largest in Texas history — didn’t reach Pantex, though flames came within 3 miles (5 kilometers). And Armstrong says it’s highly unlikely that plutonium pits, stored in fire-resistant drums and shelters, would have been affected by wildfire.

"But the size and speed of the grassland fires, and Pantex’s urgent response, underscore how much is at stake as climate change stokes extreme heat and drought, longer fire seasons with larger, more intense blazes and supercharged rainstorms that can lead to catastrophic flooding. The Texas fire season often starts in February, but farther west it has yet to ramp up, and is usually worst in summer and fall."

"The Havasupai Tribe said the Navajo Nation has disregarded the aboriginal people who live on the land, and failed to consult them before entering into a dangerous agreement for #radioactive #uranium hauling. There are two trucks now each weekday, traveling at high rates of speed, each carrying 24 tons of radioactive matter that is only covered with tie-down tarps from the Grand Canyon to the #UraniumMill in Utah.

"Havsuw' Baaja, Havasupai, are Guardians of the #GrandCanyon and have opposed #UraniumMining since time immemorial to protect their land and water for future generations, the Havasupai Tribe said today.

"We are deeply disappointed in #EnergyFuels Resources, Inc., and the Navajo Nation for not including us in their discussions that ultimately led to the dangerous decision to allow hauling of radioactive material across our aboriginal lands," the Havasupai Tribe said.

"The Navajo Tribe is not the only tribe or community affected by this activity."

#NavajoNation is 'Back Peddling' by Allowing #Uranium Transport through #Dine' Communities and More Dumping on #Utes

TUBA CITY -- "#LeonaMorgan, Dine' co-founder of #HaulNo!, said the Navajo Nation is now "back peddling" by allowing radioactive uranium waste to be transported through Dine' communities. This radioactive transport from the #GrandCanyon means even more deadly waste for another Native community -- the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.

"Now, with little or no information along the haul route, the Navajo government expects the Dine' Chapters on the route to each have an emergency preparedness plan. Leona asked if the Dine' communities are aware of this and whether the Navajo Chapters are certified to deal with radioactive emergencies.

"'Who are their First Responders?' Ultimately, Dine' will have to confront the Navajo President and the Navajo Department of Justice, she said.
'We were not included in that agreement,' Leona said of the agreement between the Navajo Nation and #Energy Fuels.

"'There was no free, prior and informed consent,' Leona said, quoting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP]. 'The people in the communities were not consulted.'

"'How can they start transporting on February 12th, when there aren't even any checkpoints? We don't even have an #AirMonitoring system,' Leona said of the lack of preparation for radioactive
transport on the Navajo Nation.
Energy Fuels plans to pass through Navajo communities with six to ten trucks of radioactive waste,
beginning on Feb. 12, 2025.

"Leona urged communities to organize, and pointed out that Navajo Chapters can have their own checkpoints. With the new push for '#DrillBabyDrill,' by the U.S. President, the Navajo Nation faces an uncertain future, she said. The U.S. is investing money into the development of #CriticalEarthMinerals and investing in Energy Fuels mill at White Mesa Ute.

"'We need to push our government to do what we want -- not what the federal government wants.'

"'It's going to get worse because they think nuclear is clean energy,' Leona said of the push for alternative energy.

"The Navajo Nation's agreement with Energy Fuels means more dangerous radioactive dumping in the #WhiteMesaUte community. In the agreement, Energy Fuels states it will transport 10,000 tons of uranium-bearing cleanup materials from abandoned #UraniumMines within the Navajo Nation.

"Leona was recently voted by the Navajo Nation Council to serve on the Diné #UraniumRemediation Advisory Commission, in an advisory position to the Navajo President and Council.

"Speaking in #TubaCity on Saturday, Leona said Haul No! began in 2016 when it became known that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine would begin mining in the Grand Canyon. Now, there is the new battle as the Navajo Nation government has approved uranium transport through Navajo communities to the White Mesa Ute community.

PHOENIX— "Local and national public-interest groups, as well as #Havasupai Tribe members, delivered more than 17,000 petition signatures to Gov. Katie Hobbs today urging her to use her authority to close the Pinyon Plain uranium mine that threatens the waters of the #GrandCanyon and the Havasupai Tribe.

"This comes after the groups, scientists and many others sent a letter to the governor in January outlining the threats posed by this mine and asking for her assistance with its closure.

"'The Havasupai Tribe, other Tribal leaders, and those who care about protecting Grand Canyon and its waters have fought the Pinyon Plain uranium mine for decades because it threatens the waters of Grand Canyon and the Havasupai,' said Sandy Bahr, director for #SierraClub’s Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter. 'Gov. Hobbs can and should help shut down this mine as once the mine contaminates the groundwater, there is no way to clean it up. The best way to protect Grand Canyon and the people who depend on its waters is to move forward with closure of this mine.'

"The Pinyon Plain mine, which began extracting uranium ore on Jan. 8, [2024] is seven miles south of Grand Canyon National Park and inside the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Although President Biden’s national monument designation permanently bans new mining claims and development inside the monument, it exempts preexisting claims with valid existing rights like the Pinyon Plain uranium mine.

"'Neither industry nor regulators can guarantee that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine won’t irretrievably damage aquifers that feed Grand Canyon’s precious springs,' said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest director at the Center for Biological Diversity. 'That’s not a risk worth taking. At the Center we stand with the Havasupai Tribe asking Gov. Hobbs to close the mine now.'

"The petitions delivered to the governor by groups including the Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity, National Parks Conservation Association, #WildArizona, #ChispaArizona, and #HaulNo!, along with Tribal members, request that she 'do everything [she] can to help protect the waters of Grand Canyon, the new national monument, and these waters that are essential to the existence of the Havasupai people. This mine should be closed before it creates irreversible harm.'"

"Conducting research on Israeli nuclear weapons has historically been very challenging, not least because Israel purposely does not acknowledge its own possession of nuclear weapons. Moreover, Western governments normally do not include Israel in their descriptions of nuclear-armed states. Additionally, Israeli nuclear whistleblowers have faced significant penalties; in 1986, former nuclear technician #MordechaiVanunu was kidnapped by Israeli intelligence services and spent 18 years in prison after giving a detailed interview about Israel’s nuclear program to the Sunday Times (Myre 2004). This chilling effect means that individuals with knowledge of Israel’s nuclear program have been understandably reluctant to provide on-the-record information, which dilutes the ability of open-source researchers to analyze Israel’s nuclear forces. Thankfully, over the past two decades, historians like Avner Cohen and William Burr have contributed invaluable research that has made previously unknown nuances of Israel’s opaque nuclear policy available to the public.1

"Additionally, since 1997 a US law known as the Kyl-Bingaman Amendment has prohibited US companies from publishing satellite imagery at a resolution that is 'no more detailed or precise than satellite imagery of Israel that is available from commercial sources.' For decades, this has meant that the majority of commercially available satellite imagery of Israel has been limited to a resolution of approximately two meters, making it very difficult to analyze in detail. However, in June 2020, the US Commercial Remote Sensing Regulatory Affairs Office announced that it would now allow commercial imagery providers to offer enhanced imagery of Israel at a resolution of 0.4 meters (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2020). The move was made in order to bring American imagery providers in line with their foreign counterparts, which had already been producing imagery at that level for several years. As a result, we have incorporated higher-resolution imagery into this article."

"Ominous trends continue to point the world toward global catastrophe. The war in Ukraine and the widespread and growing reliance on nuclear weapons increase the risk of nuclear escalation. #China, #Russia, and the #UnitedStates are all spending huge sums to expand or modernize their #nuclear arsenals, adding to the ever-present danger of nuclear war through mistake or miscalculation.

"In 2023, Earth experienced its hottest year on record, and massive floods, wildfires, and other climate-related disasters affected millions of people around the world. Meanwhile, rapid and worrisome developments in the life sciences and other disruptive technologies accelerated, while governments made only feeble efforts to control them.

"The members of the Science and Security Board have been deeply worried about the deteriorating state of the world. That is why we set the Doomsday Clock at two minutes to midnight in 2019 and at 100 seconds to midnight in 2022. Last year, we expressed our heightened concern by moving the Clock to 90 seconds to midnight—the closest to global catastrophe it has ever been—in large part because of Russian threats to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine.

"Today, we once again set the Doomsday Clock at 90 seconds to midnight because humanity continues to face an unprecedented level of danger. Our decision should not be taken as a sign that the international security situation has eased. Instead, leaders and citizens around the world should take this statement as a stark warning and respond urgently, as if today were the most dangerous moment in modern history. Because it may well be.

"But the world can be made safer. The Clock can move away from midnight. As we wrote last year, 'In this time of unprecedented global danger, concerted action is required, and every second counts.' That is just as true today."

"Just days after the United States allowed Ukraine to use its long-range missile for deep strikes within Russian territory; President Vladimir Putin has approved changes to his country’s nuclear doctrine.

"The changes to the nuclear doctrine have been approved by Putin on Tuesday.

"The most noticeable change is that it expands the conditions under which nuclear weapons can be used by Moscow.

"To put things into perspective, Russia can now use nuclear weapons in instances when a non-nuclear state supported by nuclear power attacks its area.

"The timing suggests that it is the U.S. President Joe Biden’s approval to Kyiv for using the MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (#ATACMS) for deep strikes within Russian territory that has brought about this shift in the Russian nuclear doctrine.

"When reports of the U.S. go-ahead for use of ATACMS had surfaced, Kremlin had warned that it could lead to a significant new round of escalation in the ongoing war.

New updates in Russia’s nuclear doctrine

"The revised doctrine approved by Putin states that nuclear strikes by Moscow can be justified in case of aggression against the Russian Federation 'by any non-nuclear state with the participation or support of a nuclear state.'

"It further states that nuclear retaliation by Russia can be carried out if there is a deployment of missile defense systems, medium- and short-range ballistic missiles, precision non-nuclear and hypersonic weapons, strike drones and directed energy weapons by a potential adversary.

"According to a report by The Moscow Times, the document also states that Moscow will reserve the right to go ahead with nuclear options for retaliation if weapons of mass destruction, or conventional ones which threaten the integrity of the country, are used by the adversary.

"The changes in the policy had been proposed by Putin earlier this year in September when Kyiv had begun seeking U.S. permission to use long-range missiles for strikes within Russia.

"Back then the Russian President had also warned Ukraine and the West that the policy change could alter the course of the conflict, making it seem like the U.S. and other NATO alliance members are also involved in the war."

"Nearby on the #NavajoNation, there are more than 500 abandoned uranium mines and there are massive #UraniumMill waste sites, where the ore was processed. These all emit #RadonGas. He pointed out that the #McArthurRiver, #KeyLakeUranium Mine and mill in northern #Saskatchewan, Canada is the world's largest uranium mine and mill.

"Petuuche said he believes that the cancers now that the people in his area are suffering from are a result of radioactivity. There was also the atomic bomb testing in Nevada.
