"Carney's word on the environment means nothing, we can't rely on him," Patrick Bonin, Bloc critic for environment, said in French.
"It will probably be billions more in public money for oil companies, it's a testament to how Mr. Carney doesn't care about the environment (...) Not only can people not trust him, but unfortunately there is no credibility when he talks about climate change."
Before the budget vote, Steven Guilbeault was dispatched to win Elizabeth May's vote, "having received assurances from Carney's office that tax credits for enhanced oil recovery would not be in the budget or added to it afterwards."
May said Carney's flip-flop amounted to a "significant betrayal" and she now questions his word going forward.
Before Mark Carney's flip-flop, Canada had a "a pretty clear stance" on ending public subsidies to fossil fuel companies; 'extending tax credits to enhanced oil recovery is a "step in the wrong direction"'
Carney's government has ignored the Net-Zero Advisory Body for at least six months.
"There have been major changes to existing climate policies that will now no longer allow us to get anywhere close to achieving our 2030 or 2035 targets and the NZAB has not been consulted in advance of these decisions being made"
UBC Professor Simon Donner, Net-Zero Advisory Body’s co-chair: "I grew tired of fighting a system that was increasingly not working, or listening"
Catherine Abreu, director at International Climate Politics Hub: "New major oil and gas projects, as proposed in the new MOU with Alberta, will use Canadian taxpayer dollars to grow what is already the largest- and least-controlled source of climate pollution in the country"
Climate change advisers quit over Carney’s deal with Alberta:
"Mark Carney’s government has sidelined its independent climate advisory body and is putting Canada’s climate targets at risk"
'... there’s the risk the federal government will find itself financially and politically attached to an increasingly divisive project that will leave “the Liberal coalition in shambles (...) I think, ultimately, this is an electoral gamble, and I think it's a bigger one than they seem to think"'
"There were centre-left voters willing to prop up a Carney government in order to keep Poilievre out of power — with climate and the environment being strong motivations (...) Going ahead with this gives them permission to pull back from the Liberals"
"Carney, focused on making waves with conservatives in the rest of Canada, likely underestimated how important the oil tanker ban is on the West Coast"; his "decision will also have significant ripple effects for the 20 Liberal BC MPs largely concentrated in more environmentally conscious urban and coastal ridings"
"There’s likely to be a "political tsunami” and serious pushback from environmental groups and First Nations that could echo the widespread protests and legal battles that ultimately derailed the Northern Gateway project"

"It’s also a major step backwards for our government to consider expanding Canada’s fossil-fuel industries to our own environmental detriment, while many other countries are moving toward the future by heavily investing in renewable clean energy."
The Pacific North Coast "is absolutely the wrong place to be running bitumen pipelines and shipping it in tankers, given the extremely serious and consequential environmental risks involved. This northern pipeline proposal was rejected several years ago for sound and thoroughly researched reasons."
"An oil spill would cause catastrophic damage to an area that is rich in biodiversity of species, culture and habitats, and supports an oceans economy of $1.3 billion, directly employing over 11,000 people"
"In the places where the pipeline might get built, there’s basically no monitoring of earthquakes. There’s no monitoring of landslides. And we don’t have the instrumentation that would actually map out small earthquakes along these faults"
A Carney-Smith pipeline forced through BC and passing through the Rocky Mountain trench "could spell catastrophe", as the area "poses immense geological hazard"

"The move sends the message that the federal government can make significant decisions about a province’s territory without consultation — an approach that is bound to have ongoing ripple effects, especially in Quebec"
"By inking an agreement with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for a proposed oil pipeline across BC, despite its opposition, Prime Minister Mark Carney has undermined provincial authority and raised red flags for other partners in the federation"
"That really goes against the spirit and the principles of federal government"

ICYMI: the Carney-Smith MOU "goes much further" than pipelines & the pointless Pathways carbon capture BS, with a "slash-and-burn" approach to our climate: ditching clean electricity regulations, the oil & gas emissions cap, & the oil tanker moratorium; the MOU also includes "a dramatic reversal in policy" to allow carbon capture tax credits to be used for enhanced oil recovery (despite that being explicitly excluded in the budget).

Before he resigned from Mark Carney's cabinet, Steven Guilbeault tried to work with him to change the MOU, but "was told Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wouldn’t budge."
Who did we elect as PM, again? Mark Carney, or Danielle Smith?
