#NonDualism

I'm interested in #nonDualism and am reading The Untethered Soul by Michael A Singer.

I quite like the book and am getting some useful ideas from it. But the Americanisms are like a caricature - this book about liberation from psyche - with exercises like "when you get in your car" and examples like "you see your someone who looks like your girlfriend smiling in a corvette with someone else..." and "while at the lights.."

I know the author is trying to show how his concepts can be applied in "normal" life but it's like he can't see how much his assumptions and context are shaped by being a straight white American cis man.

I'm not saying this because I think I'm better, we're all shaped by our context and cultures, but just because the subject matter should lend itself to awareness of that and this is conspicuous by its absence.

Running with that idea in my own words: by starting to categorize things as tov and ra, we create a differentiation - which becomes a difference/distance between ourselves and g-d. Similarly, death enters the picture the moment we begin engaging in the dualistic point of view (eating the fruit of knowledge of good and bad -> certain death). We begin to sort, "this is good, that is bad, god is here, god is not there, this is lively, that is dead", and we begin to see our own perceptions of things rather than existence as it is. (Only a sith deals in absolutes.)

Jewish practice makes things sacred and holy by honoring and making them different. It's "performative" in the Butlerian sense. We dance with the tension בֵּין קֹדֶשׁ לְחֹל as we strive to recognize that creation is still unfolding, there is no "tov", nor "ra", and we're still in the presence of the holy one.

What am I made of?

"I" am made of "non-I" things.

And what are "non-I" things made of?

"non-non-I" things...

Feeling into this, we can see that all things are, as Buddhism says, "empty" of any independent existence.

@RickiTarr Not all humans do separate their minds and bodies into two categories. It's very much a Western philosophy, although quite an old one. Mind/body dualism is usually credited to Descartes, but elements of the idea date back to Plato and Aristotle.

As a Catholic, I reject #CartesianDualism in favor of an older #nondualism, but it's one of the basic foundations of current philosophical theory in the West. To my knowledge, there is no equivalent philosophy outside of Western Civilization; nor was it widespread prior to Descartes and his disciples.

The idea that there is a bunch of matter existing in time, and a "me" existing for a short time within that, is a useful model of the experience going on, so it tends to be by far the most common one and goes silently unquestioned.

At any moment it can be recognized that this is only one such model and that there are infinitely many others.

It is also possible to be without any such model at all. An empty transparent state of mind, completely free and awake.

A friend of mine recently mentioned Occam's Razor and I thought it would make for a good approach to meditative inquiry.

The reality right in front of us is simple and clear, when we shave away all that is unnecessary or added by "us", then rest there.

Recent #meditation thoughts:

What is the difference between "awareness" and "attention"? Is shifting my attention around the same as shifting my awareness around?

When I look closely at the nature of my experience, I notice that there is in fact an awareness of attention. There can be an awareness of where attention is focused. Awareness doesn't shift around.

It is so subtle but the closer I get to the "I thought" and relax into it, the clearer this becomes.

Right from the start we have this dichotomy. There is me, and there is the practice, and I am going to do the practice. It's like two mountains facing each other. And then people wonder why they don't make progress. We need to dissolve the boundary between the subject and the object. In other words, we have to become the meditation.

I don't have kids but I really loved listening to this short and wise childrens book...

It is indeed for ages 4 to 104!

I'm reminded that all is temporary. Feelings, experiences, personality, even a solid sense of self all come and go. And yet there is that sense of direct "I" that always stays regardless of all that. Just raw conscious experience itself.

I guess I'll do an #introduction, now that I'm here!
Howdy y'all, I'm Em.

These days I'm feeling too #queer for shul here in Germany, too religious for the queer "community".

I spend a lot of time thinking about how Whiteness and White supremacism manifest in our society and minds. I'm learning to #decolonize my self and always looking for friends who actively seek the same.

I also spend a lot of time these days thinking about #phenomenology, #animism, #panentheism(/ #monism?), and #nondualism.

I'm a software developer by day, but that world is becoming less and less important to me.

My partner and I have a 70 year old steel sailboat that we're completely overhauling together, and someday we hope to set sail from #Hamburg towards wherever the wind takes us. I'll tag posts about the boat with #SVBellaCiao, you can follow that tag if you want.

Until then, come on over. Let me make you a tea. How ya doin, but I mean it, really. Whatcha thinkin about these days?

@thor i did a course of this when i was in a mess; it kinda helped, but for ultimate results go all the way to #nondualism

#AdvaitaVedanta (/ʌdˈvaɪtə vɛˈdɑːntə/; Sanskrit: अद्वैत वेदान्त, is a #Hindu #sādhanā, a #path of #spiritual #discipline and #experience, and the oldest #extant #tradition of the #orthodox Hindu school #Vedānta. The term #Advaita (literally "non-secondness", but usually rendered as "#nondualism",and often equated with #monism) refers to the idea that #Brahman alone is ultimately real, while the #transient phenomenal world is an illusory appearance (#maya) of Brahman.

I often write articles that I myself want to re-read frequently.

Today I wrote a collection of short pointers and exercises for those interested in meditation, finding mental peace/clarity and non-dualism.

I intend to keep updating this page in future (and perhaps write a book about it eventually... stay tuned).

I hope it helps you find peace as much as it helps me 🙏
