It’s been almost three weeks since my hike, and I’m just now starting to go through my photos. The first photo is a flock of diver birds that I still don’t know the species of. I hope I can recognize them at some point. Adjusting to city life has been really difficult this time, because the hike was just that awesome.

52 viittomaa Pohjoismaiden nuorilta!

Miten viitotaan ”poikaystävä” ruotsalaisella viittomakielellä? Tai miten ”lintsata” norjalaisella viittomakielellä? Entä ”suudella” islantilaisella viittomakielellä?

Aivan kuten puhutut kielet, myös viittomakielet kehittyvät jatkuvasti. Erityisesti nuorempi sukupolvi luo uusia ilmaisuja, muuttaa merkityksiä ja lainaa muista kielistä ja kulttuureista. He muokkaavat viittomakieltä elämäntavallaan, huumorillaan ja yhteisöillään.

Nuoret viittomakielen käyttäjät lainaavat usein amerikkalaisia tai kansainvälisiä viittomia, jotka toimivat keskinäisen ymmärryksen perustana, kun nuoret eri maista ja kulttuureista tapaavat toisiaan. Pohjoismaiden nuoret lainaavat myös toistensa viittomia, mikä auttaa luomaan yhteistä ymmärrystä Pohjoismaiden välillä.

Kampanjassa ”52 viittomaa Pohjoismaiden nuorilta!” nuoret Tanskasta, Norjasta, Ruotsista, Suomesta ja Islannista esittävät joka viikko yhden viittoman omalla viittomakielellään. Kampanja käynnistyy kansainvälisellä kuurojen viikolla syyskuussa 2025.

We had four river crossings on our hike, and this was my friend’s first time doing any. I missed filming the first one, but here he is crossing different bodies of water with varying difficulty and without even falling! 😅 These were not the hardest crossings, but still a real challenge for someone unaccustomed, and the cold water made it worse. To top it off, he lost one of his crossing boots, which added to the difficulty, since it’s easy to cut your feet without proper footwear and not even notice because of the numbing cold.

Some quick shots from our five-day hike in the Muotkatunturi Wilderness Area. The weather was awesome, though a bit too warm for this time of year. Ruska is just starting to show, but the full color bloom is still ahead. Tomorrow I’ll continue my trip solo, heading to Reisa Nasjonalpark in Norway and then on to the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area in Finland.
