For #MountainMonday: Subalpine Fir and the wildflower covered slopes of the sub-alpine meadows area of Manning Park in British Columbia, Canada. The Heather Lake fire (2022) burn scar is in the distance with peaks of the North Cascades range (Washington State) beyond.

Subalpine meadows in British Columbia. A slope with small plants in large fields are dotted with patches of subalpine fir trees. Further in the distance rolling hills and mountains are covered in a large burn scar from a 2022 wildfire. Beyond that are some taller mountain peaks in the North Cascades range.

@elaterite Interesting that you call it “Ross Reservoir” instead of “Ross Lake”. I do not think that man-made bodies of water are lakes. It hides a deep canyon through which the Skagit River flowed. (Though there is a historic natural lake buried under Baker “Lake”.)

Diablo Lake North Cascades National Park Washington

Diablo Lake, nestled within Washington's North Cascades National Park, is a striking reservoir renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters. This distinctive hue results from glacial flour—fine rock particles produced by surrounding glaciers.

Diablo Lake North Cascades National Park Washington

Diablo Lake, nestled within Washington's North Cascades National Park, is a striking reservoir renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters. This distinctive hue results from glacial flour—fine rock particles produced by surrounding glaciers—that remains suspended in the water, reflecting sunlight and creating the lake's signature color. The lake was formed in 1930 following the construction of Diablo Dam along the Skagit River, serving as a key component of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project managed by Seattle City Light.

Easily accessible via the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20), Diablo Lake offers visitors a range of recreational activities. The Diablo Lake Trail, a moderately challenging 7.6-mile roundtrip hike with an elevation gain of approximately 1,300 feet, provides hikers with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding peaks.

#flyfishing #pnw #northcascades #hiking Went for a hike up the S. Fork of the Cascade River. Hoped to do fly fishing. But the day was hot, and the glacial runoff was too high. This is my favorite river. This is part of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

North Cascades National Park is home to the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, operated by Seattle City Light. This project comprises three major dams:

Gorge Dam: The first dam constructed in the project, completed in 1924. It was later replaced by the larger Gorge High Dam in 1961. The dam is located near the town of Newhalem.

Diablo Dam: Completed in 1930, Diablo Dam was the tallest dam in the world at the time, standing at 389 feet. It is situated upstream of Gorge Dam and creates Diablo Lake.

Ross Dam: The tallest of the three, Ross Dam stands at 540 feet and was completed in stages between 1937 and 1953. It forms Ross Lake, which extends into British Columbia, Canada.
Paulo and Josh's Great Adventure

Collectively, these dams generate approximately 20% of Seattle City Light's electricity supply.

Tour Opportunities

For visitors interested in exploring the hydroelectric facilities, Seattle City Light offers the Skagit Tours, which include the Gorge Powerhouse Insider’s Tour.

North cascades national park. One of many areas in Washington that will be destroyed by the GOP. Life is short, enjoy what you have while you have it and fight for the things you’re not willing to lose.

A photo from the edge of a ridge. On the left the rocky ground drops off dramatically, on the right the rocky ridge has some small foliage from blueberry bushes and a few conifer trees. Evening light shines on a mountain peak in the left rear of the photograph. Most of the rest of the photo is in shade.

#hiking #pnw #northcascades Hiked the East Bank Trail along Ross Lake with a friend today. It’s a mostly tree lined hike at the start. No snow. We did about 11 miles round trip. It was a hard workout without a specific destination. Saw 5-6 overnight hiking groups - a Scouting troop, some twos and threes, a family, and some solos. The NCNP has been discovered. It’s a good thing in the long run - use supports the park. No vistas - just closeups.
