Speaking of #Rewilding, some new signs went up at nearby #CaliforniaFields in Southern #Maine! Looks like the #MaineDepartmentOfInlandFisheries finally acknowledged that there are some #EndangeredSpecies there, and put the pressure on #BlueTriton / #PolandSprings / #BigWater -- who had planted a bunch of pine trees in the field (to hide the drilled wells that they claim are "springs"). But now they have to take them down and restore the grasslands! (And it's full of #Milkweed which the #MonarchButterflies love!)

A Northern Harrier! This one got some other birders I met on the sanctuary a bit confused, but a local volunteer explained: these are females, and most people are used to seeing the males, which have a blue-grey coloration.

A pair of puffed up black American Coots standing under the bright sunlight on a cold morning. One is on the frozen mud, its black head and white bill clear under the sun with a gleaming red eye. The other is standing on the frozen water, its yellow-green lobed feet spread wide over the ice. A clear red eye looks over the white bill.

Perched at the top of a long thick broken branch, weathered grey from the intense desert sun, a bright yellow Western Meadowlark looks off to the left. Its yellow chest and black throat mark are surrounded by the speckled shoulders and topped with the round head tucked low into its neck. The small thin beak is pointed to the left, with a small round eye looking out over it.

A Loggerhead Shrike, a small white and grey bird with a black eye mask extending back from a sharp beak, perches on the winter brown branches of a bush. It's tiny black feet gripping the thin twigs. The black eyes gleam in the sunlight, a small white dot seemingly the only thing to separate the eye from the surrounding black mask feathers. It is looking straight forward over the sharp beak, seemingly glaring into the camera lens.

Almost hidden amid the tall light tan grass, a dark brown Northern Harrier stands on the ground, its long body hunkered down low to the ground. The round owl like face is scanning the field, dark eye gleaming in the bright sunlight.

Female Northern Harrier. "Northern Harriers are slender, medium-sized raptors with long, fairly broad wings and a long, rounded tail. They have a flat, owl-like face and a small, sharply hooked bill. Harriers often fly with their wings held in a dihedral, or V-shape above the horizontal. Males are gray above and whitish below with black wingtips, a dark trailing edge to the wing, and a black-banded tail. Females and immatures are brown, with black bands on the tail. Adult females have whitish undersides with brown streaks, whereas immatures are buffy, with less streaking. All Northern Harriers have a white rump patch that is obvious in flight." (AAB)

On a sunny day, in the distance, a Northern Harrier is gliding through a grassy field with tall, dry grass. It looks similar to a Hawk but its head is conspicuously dark compared to the rest of its body. Its chest and underwings are a bright tan with dark speckles. The background includes dense green trees with no view of the sky. The photo is slightly motion blurred.
