30 years later, and the #OKCBombing + reaction is suddenly very relevant again for the unthinking "divisions" of today. Bill Clinton still feels a pull to the site, and he's got the 2025 context down pat—listen to this snippet: shm.to/Oo32oR9

The Oklahoma City bombing was the first time the Internet impacted my life. I was working for an online bookseller at the time, so I heard about the bombing well before the mainstream media reported the news. #OKCBombing

If you want to understand you should read about McVeigh and the OKC bombing.

Thinking about the 30th anniversary of the #OKCBombing brought back memories of being a freshman reporter during that time about an hour away, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, close enough that we did do some news coverage of the campus response to tragedy.

I wrote a story about the nursing department's response that I remember writing well, especially of the short interview I got to do with a very tired nurse who had come back home to rest before heading back to OKC. My story is on page 8 of the issue. it definitely brings back memories of that time.

Today is April 19th, the 29th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.

I'm thinking today about that day and all of my memories of it, but also of how elements of that event have reverberated through my life, most notably the fact that Timothy McVeigh was a Gulf War combat veteran and he was a right-wing extremist.

I was very conservative in 1995 (in my defense, I was only 19 and very naive) and even had some sympathy for the anti-government rhetoric that fueled McVeigh. But when I saw with my own eyes the horrific violence he had unleashed, it started to make me question my beliefs, so that by a few years later I was a convinced pacifist who was quickly outgrowing my conservativism. Those changes directly led to my career as a lawyer for members of the military struggling against injustice and to much of my activism in other settings as well.

Watching the runners pass our house. A man just jogged past in full kilt regalia. Meanwhile, neighbor across the street is getting into her car to go to church. I wish her luck getting out of the neighborhood; we are completely boxed in.

I appreciate this piece from journalist Judy Woodruff recognizing the Oklahoma City bombing anniversary by examining what extremism looked like when 168 people were murdered 28 years ago, and the parallels to what extremism looks like today.

Worth your time to watch.
