Hello #Fediverse, here’s today’s daily OS-tan!

This is Windows 3.1-tan, also known as Ōbaba-sama (大婆様), a personification of Windows 3.1! She’s a quiet and graceful character often depicted in a long, frilly violet gown with a 3.1 brooch on her collar.

Ōbaba has a unique connection to DOS Kitty, her inseparable companion who represents DOS. This relationship reflects Windows 3.x’s reliance on DOS. In some depictions, DOS Kitty is portrayed as a black cat, while in others, she’s a small catgirl nurse.

In the OS-tan family, Ōbaba is considered the younger sister of Oichi (Windows 1.0-tan) and the older sister of NT-Mama. She’s also often seen as Windows 95-tan's mother.

Originally, Ōbaba did not exist as a character and Windows 3.1 was portrayed as a box similar to what Windows 98 and 98SE-tan have but more recent depictions prefer the human design by EG33. Her manner of speaking is often ending sentences with "ja". Despite being retired, she’s depicted tending a family shrine or occasionally donning military uniforms, suggesting a proactive role in the "OS Wars."

Ōbaba’s design debuted in 2004.

Hello #Fediverse, here’s today’s daily OS-tan!

This one is of Neptune-tan, a OS-tan of Windows Neptune, the canceled Windows version. Neptune-tan is often depicted as a strong and fierce character, sometimes shown wielding large weapons and surrounded by friends like Windows 97, Odyssey, Moseko, and various designs of Longhorn.

She wears a black, sleeveless qipao with blue accents and red bracelets, a red talisman is on her collar and she has mechanical headpieces that give her a slightly futuristic vibe. Her long, green pigtails are usually accompanied by a red visor which has become one of her most recognisable features.

Several of her artworks were created by an artist known as イオンのバイド (Ion no Baido) on Pixiv such as the first image shown, though it’s believed they did not originate her concept due to differing art styles.

Ehh... since new people are joining, I might as well update my old intro. Thankfully, my instance allows for a higher word count on posts!

I am Sinclair-Speccy, your resident computer nerd. I go by Sinclair, Speccy, Sinco, Altair, or even Alphonse. My primary interests are #RetroComputing, #OldTech, and #OStan. You’ll usually find me boosting retro tech content and occasionally posting it myself, mostly retro tech ads. I’m fascinated by vintage mainframes like the IBM 704, CDC 6500, and Whirlwind I as well as microcomputers such as the Altair 8800 and MK14, but I am not old enough to have ever used them in person.

I’ve moved around a bit online as I started on .art, then bitbang.social and now oldbytes.space. When not geeking out over computers I enjoy experimenting with older operating systems using emulators like 86Box, VirtualBox, Bochs, and QEMU or playing games such as the Sims 4, Sims 3, Arma 3 and Universe Sandbox. My interest in emulation all started when I managed to run Yggdrasil Linux from the '90s!

I also do 3D rendering in Bryce 3D which I mainly post on my account for my website (sakurajima.moe/@themainframe) which also hosts content on my 3 worldbuilding settings and I share some of my work on DeviantArt. One of my favourite niche fandoms is OS-tans which is turning operating systems and hardware into anime characters. I even have my own OS-tan universe that is hosted on my site.

Musically I vibe with #vaporwave, #synthwave, #darksynth,#phonk, and experimental music. Some favorite artists include Windows96, Dynatron, Carpenter Brut, KSLV Noh, and Frums.

As for some other stuff I enjoy #mythology, #transformers, #cats, #fantasy, #nature such as #flowers and #plants and #animals, #steampunk, a bit of #classicalmusic, #starwars, #photography, #art, #space, #cyberpunk and #scifi but you’re more likely to find that content on my other account.

You can check out my website here: sinclair-speccy.github.io/The- and I hope to expand it into a tech journalism platform someday, though motivation and its static nature kind of stop me...

Hello #Fediverse, here's your "daily" OS-tan art and the first of my reworked daily OS-tan posts!

This one is of Windows Me-tan!

Also known as Emui, Me-tan is the original OS-tan from the Futaba Channel, depicting Windows Millennium Edition. With her green pigtails and clumsy demeanor, she has become one of the most beloved OS-tans.

Back in 2003, the anthropomorphic character craze was at its peak in Japan and the anonymous bulletin board community was heavily influenced by this trend. Me-tan was created in Futaba on August 6, 2003, though some believe she first appeared in July of the same year.

Portrayed as a clumsy yet cheerful maid, Me-tan is often depicted as a lovable “natural idiot” who humorously fails to defrag, puts fried noodles in the sink, and microwaves coke.

Art is by creator who goes under as ME-aki :P

Did you know that the concept of "OS-tan" has existed way before even ME-tan was made?

Take OS Idol Win-chan as an example. Win-chan's earliest appearance in media seems to be from a promotional CD by Enterbrain, which dates back as early as October 1998. This would mean that Win-chan predates Me-tan by almost 5 years. It's not specified what Windows version she represents.

Another example can be Magical Toko-chan who is from around 1999. She seems to represent BSD, has a theme song called "Rainbow Holy☆Trident" and has a sister that represents Solaris.

There is also also another "Wintel Miku" although there’s little art of her. She seems to represent WindowsNT4.0/95/98 and was created as the creator was inspired by Mgaical Toko.

Besides Win-Chan, Magical Toko, Solaris-Chan and Wintel Miku all have sites dedicared to them!

Toko: tokochan.haun.org/

Solaris-Chan: pony.tail.net/toko/sol.html

Wintel Miku: web.archive.org/web/2000022606

Also fun fact, Win-chan was made by the creator of Sgt.Frog and the concept designer for Kemono Friends, Yoshizaki Mine! This can be seen on his profile for his site here: mnet.nicomi.com/MINEprofile/YO

Bleh. I might start reposting my old daily OS-tan posts so they're in order and have alt text by deleting the old ones.

I hope this doesn't bother people, but I think it is easier this way...

When I first did the posts they weren't in any real order so I want to fix that by going in order :p

Hello #Fediverse, here’s today’s daily OS-tan!

This one is of Mutsumi Madobe, a lesser-known member of the Madobe family and a personification of Windows Vista! Mutsumi is portrayed as the older sister of Nanami Madobe who represents Windows 7, though her origins could be seen as quite unique compared to other OS-tans.

Mutsumi first appeared through tweets made from Nanami’s Twitter account beginning on October 3, 2009. While she was never officially used for promotional campaigns, she did show up in some Madobe Family Trees included with official merchandise. On special occasions like April Fool’s Day 2010, she “took over” tweeting duties, using the hashtag #6me.

Unlike Nanami she has no official artwork but on April 20, 2010 the artist Sappappa designed an unofficial interpretation of her based on her tweets. This fan-made depiction gained enough popularity to inspire derivative artwork.

Mutsumi’s design and character reflect her connection to Vista. She’s a little taller than Nanami and is often noted for her larger bust, perhaps showing Vista’s higher memory demands compared to Windows 7 (the same case with XP Pro-tan). She loves eating gyudon and prefers to skip outdated software in favor of new releases: a subtle nod to the compatibility struggles that Vista faced during its time.

There was even a joke site made for her you can find here: t1500.com/april/2014/

A bowl of oranges sits on top of the kotatsu, and a small gray cat is sleeping underneath it. Hello #Fediverse, here’s your “daily” OS-tan!

In honor of Windows 8’s 12th anniversary which I missed (and not doing one of those posts for a long time), I'm doing one for Yū Madobe and Ai Madobe, the official mascots and OS-tans for Windows 8/8.1 who were created for special bundles by Windows Navi+ that came with some copies of Windows 8 during its launch in Japan, known as the Windows 8 Pro DSP Release Commemorative Packs.

Yū is the quieter older sister with a love for gadgets, a hidden Otaku at heart, and someone who thrives on the latest digital trends and has the shorter hair. Her younger sister, Ai, is cheerful and loves exploring what’s new and popular among junior high trends, especially anything tech-related and is the one with longer hair. Both share a birthdate of November 18, 1996, connecting them to the Windows lineage as distant relatives of Nanami Madobe! Fun fact: The sisters nearly tied in the 2012 Akihabara Moe Character Contest!

Many believe that one character was meant to represent Windows 8 and the other Windows 8.1 although both debuted well before anyone anticipated the release of 8.1. Another theory suggests one represents Windows 8, while the other stands for RT; however, both were actually featured in the promotion of Windows 8 Pro in the Commemorative Packs. Since they were also used to promote Windows 8.1 later on, it’s more accurate to view them as representing Windows 8 and 8.1 collectively.

Same Place, Different Universe Chapter 1 (1/3)

This is an ambitious short story I wrote as an extra to go along with the development history page.

“Same Place, Different Universe” is about Marcia exploring a glimpse of the headquarters of her team’s counterpart based on that #OStan fanon I had from 2019.

Synopsis: operatingsuperstars.wordpress.

Chapter 1 “As Long As I Don’t Get Caught, I’ll Stay Off of There”: operatingsuperstars.wordpress.

I didn’t think I’d revisit it in any way after moving forward from it, but I surprise myself again!

As much as I like the angle I’m writing for Operating Superstars and focusing on having fun with it, there were ideas that I still wanted to explore but couldn’t carry over to it since they wouldn’t fit the tone.

This remake won’t be exact; details will be changed or refined to be more cohesive. Some #Worldbuilding will be revealed in this chapter, and I’ll be writing more about this remake in the next update to the development history page.

The 3D renders I recently posted are of the setting of this story within a part of their headquarters. Without a cover story to present herself as a guest to learn more about her team’s counterparts and of their universe, she had to sneak in with immense risks if she got caught.

I plan for illustrations to be added later since I still have a lot to juggle.

2024-10-01

More development notes about my previous fanon universe

The sections about the Apple and Microsoft-based groups were some of the most difficult to write about since they had the most shifting details in that fanon.

The Windows 10 characters, particularly one representing the first releases clashed with many of the older Windows characters due to when Microsoft pushed updates for Windows 10 to Windows 7 and 8 users.

There were characters to represent each of the Windows 10 releases since 10 was still thought to be the final Windows version and would receive continuous updates. Of course we know how how that went…

I might’ve also been influenced by most people I knew disliking Windows 10 then. Times sure have changed from that and this shows some #OStan or OS #Gijinka characterizations are influenced by the time they were written.

Had this fanon continued development when Windows 11 was announced, I can only speculate what my Windows 11 character would’ve been like then, and whether I would’ve retconned the Windows 10 characters to be more humble or had them undergo more character development to reflect how 10’s reputation changed.

It seems like Windows 11 now has the reputation that Windows 10 did and that 10 got vindicated 🤔

2024-09-25

Part 2 - The second major update has been added:

operatingsuperstars.wordpress.

I wrote enough about the worldbuilding and lore I had from that #OStan fanon I had in 2019 for its own page! It also covers this project’s undoing and the lessons I learned from it.

The background information about that era is on the development history page under 2019-2020 “the predecessor I had before Operating Superstars”.

operatingsuperstars.wordpress.

This fanon was influenced by:

1. The changes in the tech industry of the 2010’s that were a shake-up from the 2000’s status quo
2. Finding more historical details for OSes
3. Revisiting older ideas and replacing or adapting them
4. Exchange of ideas from me and from others that were freely shared

It had a dystopian tone in some ways which was influenced by cynicism about the tech industry in the 2010’s.

I still wanted to see hope though and one of the themes I intended were about “obsolete” OSes making new lives and destinies for themselves after being largely forgotten by the mainstream or displaced from their original groups.
