"If I must die, let it bring hope, let it be a tale: Palestinian Martyrs Guiding Us this Obon Season"
Obon season is approaching once again. Jodo Shinshu monk Rev. Devon Matsumoto powerfully reflects on how the story and practice of Obon relate to the genocide in Gaza.

In the center of Nagasaki, the smell of burning gunpowder and smoke hangs about like a real urban battle, so much so that if you don't have earplugs, your ears will ring afterwards.
But in the midst of all this noise and hustle and bustle, tears always well up in my eyes when I think that this is my final, real farewell to my deceased relatives.
Even though it's a boat I don't know.

Nagasaki's year-round event "Shoro-Nagashi".
A family event held on the first Obon festival, where the deceased who returned for Obon are put on a spirit boat and sent back to the equinox.
Fireworks are used to send off the deceased in a lively manner.
But in the midst of all this noise and hustle and bustle, tears always well up in my eyes when I think that this is my final, real farewell to my deceased relatives.

The boat's mast is 113m tall and its body 40m deep. It stretches 93m to the left of the mast and 93m to the right.
400 bundles of split pine and 130 bundles of pine needles are used to create bonfires on the 79 fire beds.
54 local men are selected to light the fires.
As the site was close to the cemetery, it is thought the custom merged with the celebrations at Obon and became a regular local event.
But what of the character 'Hō' (法)?
Well it is suggested that sometime in the 18thC a monk by the name of Nichiryō (日良), from nearby Daimyō-ji Temple (大妙寺), mimicked Nichizō by carving the character '法' on Higashiyama (東山-East Matsugasaki). Thus creating Myōhō (妙法).
