Filing: #Kroger paid #CEO $19M in 2022, typical worker almost $29K

by Alexander Coolidge Cincinnati Enquirer
May 12, 2023

"Kroger CEO #RodneyMcMullen got a 5.7% pay raise in 2022 as his compensation package climbed $1 million to $19 million, according to a corporate filing Friday morning with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

"The head of the nation's largest supermarket retailer was paid $18 million in the previous year, according to the Associated Press' methodology for executive compensation that excludes pension value changes.

"The typical worker got an $1,800 pay raise, climbing 7% in 2022 to $28,644. The ratio of McMullen's pay to the median Kroger worker – as required to be reported by the government – was 671 to 1, a decline from the ratio of 679 to 1 in the previous year.

"Kroger earned a $2.2 billion #profit on sales of $148 billion last year. In 2022, Kroger contended with higher costs as inflation soared. Overall inflation eased in 2022, climbing 6.4% - slower than 7.2% a year earlier. But the cost of food purchased at #supermarkets and #supercenters rose at a faster rate: 11.8% - the worst calendar year increase since 1978, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Also last year, the grocer proposed acquiring rival #Albertsons in a $25 billion takeover bid that regulators at the Federal Trade Commission are mulling whether to approve or fight.

"In addition to Kroger stores, the Cincinnati-based grocer operates several regional supermarket chains in 35 states, including #FredMeyer, #HarrisTeeter, #Ralphs, #Marianos, #Frys, Smith's, #KingSoopers, #QFC and others. The company has nearly 2,800 stores and employs 430,000 workers."

During #Antitrust Trial, Exec Admits #Kroger Jacked Up Milk and Egg Prices Above Inflation

"The U.S. #grocery sector—dominated by Kroger, #Walmart, and a handful of other major companies—profited hugely during the Covid-19 pandemic as corporate giants exploited supply chain disruptions to aggressively jack up prices."

Jake Johnson
Aug 28, 2024

"A top Kroger executive admitted under questioning from a Federal Trade Commission attorney on Tuesday that the grocery chain raised its egg and milk prices above the rate of inflation, a concession that came as no surprise to economists who have been highlighting #corporate #PriceGouging across the U.S. economy in recent years.

"Andy Groff, Kroger's senior director for pricing, said during a court hearing on the FTC's legal challenge to the company's proposed acquisition of #Albertsons—its primary competitor—that Kroger's objective is to 'pass through our inflation to consumers.'

"Groff's comment came in response to questioning about an internal email he sent to other Kroger executives in March. In that note, Groff observed that 'on milk and eggs, retail inflation has been significantly higher than cost inflation.'

"A Kroger spokesperson told Bloomberg in a statement that the email was 'cherry-picked' and 'does not reflect Kroger's decadeslong business model to lower prices for customers by reducing its margins.'

"But Rakeen Mabud, chief economist at the Groundwork Collaborative, noted Wednesday that 'execs all over the economy were saying this stuff on their earning calls back in 2021.'

"'This was not a secret,' Mabud added."

Well, that was a nice break. I spent a lot of time cleaning the cabinet under the sink. Roofers are working on the barn roof, so it's impossible to wfh today, since our fur-kids don't like all the noise (and neither do I). I was hoping to just spend some time posting here, but the server was down for an upgrade. But I bookmarked a lot of articles to post about #ObsceneProfits , #ObsceneSalaries and #Mining!

#ScientistRebellion's Campaign: Make Them Pay

“To avoid #ClimateCatastrophe, societies must shift into emergency mode. This includes reducing the #luxury emissions of a wealthy #elite, whose carbon footprint is orders of magnitude larger than that of the rest of us. It is unacceptable that the super-rich continue criss-crossing around the world while millions are suffering from disastrous climate impacts."

Demands:

- Ban Private Jets
- Tax Frequent Fliers
- Make Polluters Pay

#Chevron says Richmond ballot measure to tax refinery will cost Bay Area drivers

By Cornell Barnard
Friday, July 26, 2024

"One of the Bay Area's largest refineries says it's against a tax measure on November's ballot, which could force it to pay more in taxes.

"Chevron is firing back at the City of Richmond, which greenlighted the measure. Chevron says if voters approve it, drivers across the Bay Area can expect to pay more at the pump.

"'This tax is the wrong approach,' said Tolly Graves, the director of Chevron's Richmond refinery, making it clear that the company is against a refinery tax, dubbed the '#PollutersPay Initiative.'

"In November, voters will decide to tax one of the state's largest refineries $1 for each barrel of oil processed in city limits.

"'At Chevron, our objective is always to provide reliable, affordable and clean [sic] energy to our customers and this tax puts all three at risk,' said Graves.

[...]

"Supporters of the tax argue that #pollution from the refinery has impacted residents' health.

"'The local air district traces the #particulate matter from the refinery. It's five-to-11 premature deaths every year,' said Kerry Guerlin, attorney from Communities for a Better Environment Action."

Oil and gas supermajors recorded big profits in 2023

By Nancy Vu
February 2, 2024

"Three of the largest oil and gas producers this week reported strong combined profits of $85.6 billion in 2023.
On Friday, #Exxon Mobil reported $36 billion in profit for the year, supported by further oil and gas production. #Chevron outlined profits of $21.4 billion — the second-largest profits in a decade for both. #Shell on Thursday, reported adjusted earnings of $28.25 billion for the year, down significantly from 2022 but also the second-largest in a decade.

"'In 2023, we returned more cash to shareholders and produced more oil and natural gas than any year in the company’s history,' said Mike Wirth, Chevron’s chairman and chief executive officer.

"For Exxon and Chevron, the resilient profits were partly driven by strong growth in oil and gas production in the United States. The companies’ renewed focus on domestic #FossilFuel production has spurred backlash from #environmentalist activists.

"The decrease in profits in 2023 reflects that oil prices have weakened since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, some of the figures beat estimates from Wall Street. Exxon and Chevron were able to report higher than expected earnings per share during the fourth quarter but fell short of expected revenue. Shell was able to report higher than anticipated earnings for the final quarter and net income for the full year.

"Exxon was able to return $32.4 billion to shareholders last year, Chevron $26.3 billion, and Shell returned $23 billion to shareholders.

Making the polluter pay is the best way to ‘crack the climate problem’, policy study confirms

Niklas Hohne at Germany's New Climate Institute, who wasn't part of the study said: “The world really needs to make a step change, move into emergency mode and make the impossible possible.”

By Seth Borenstein, Euronews Green with AP
Published on 23/08/2024 -

"An extensive new analysis of the world’s climate policies shows their limitations and which ones really work.

"Countless policies have been thrown at the challenge of #ClimateChange, but how many have actually had an impact?

"To figure out what really works, researchers looked at 1,500 ways countries have tried to curb heat-trapping gases over the years. Their answer: Not many have done the job.

"And success often means someone has to pay a price, whether at the pump or elsewhere [why not cut into CEO's obscene profits?!!!].

[...]

"'We won't crack the climate problem in wealthier nations until the polluter pays,' said Rob Jackson, a Stanford University climate scientist and author of the book Clear Blue Sky. 'Other policies help, but nibble around the edges.'

#BigOilAndGas can afford to fix the problem they created!

Largest oil and gas producers made close to $100bn in first quarter of 2022

Shell made $9.1bn in profit, almost three times what it made in the same period last year, while Exxon raked in $8.8bn

Oliver Milman, Fri 13 May 2022

"#Shell made $9.1bn in profit from January to March, almost three times what it made in the same period last year, while #Exxon raked in $8.8bn, also a near threefold increase on 2021.

"#Chevron upped its profits to $6.5bn and #BP reveled in its highest first-quarter profits in a decade, making $6.2bn. #CoterraEnergy, a Texas-based firm, had the largest relative windfall of the 28 companies, with a 449% increase in profits on last year, to $818m."
