I think that never shall I see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Indeed, unless the billboards fall,
I'll never see a tree at all.

Tell me, O Octopus, I begs,
Is those things arms, or is they legs?
I marvel at thee, Octopus;
If I were thou, I'd call me Us.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The door of a bigoted mind opens outwards so that the only result of the pressure of facts upon it is to close it more snugly. -Ogden Nash, poet (19 Aug 1902-1971)

My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky;
Contrariwise, my blood runs cold
When little boys go by.
For little boys as little boys,
No special hate I carry,
But now and then they grow to men,
And when they do, they marry.
No matter how they tarry,
Eventually they marry.
And, swine among the pearls,
They marry little girls.
– Ogden Nash, from “Song to Be Sung by the Father of Infant Female Children”
Middle age is when you've met so many people that every new person you meet reminds you of someone else.

sticking it to the banks
The words came with a smile in light, unconventional rhyme.
Delicately phrased nonsense.
Witty, intelligent wordplay conveying serious thought.
Below, one of Ogden Nash’s five hundred poems, written in 1935 in the midst of a career that spanned the middle part of the twentieth century.
His topic: banks.
And the people understood what Nash was talking about.
"Man is an animal that is split in half down the middle and walks on the split end."

Brendan O'Kane @bokane doing the heavy lifting again - this time standing up for the 散曲. A solid example:
王和卿 - 長毛小狗
Wang Heqing (late 13th c.) - On a Small Long-Haired Dog
醜如驢,小如豬,
山海經檢遍了無尋處。
遍體渾身都是毛,我道你有似個成精物,
咬人的笤帚。
This misbegotten little thing
Is nowhere to be found in the Shan-hai jing.
Ball of fur? Malevolent sprite?
Or dust-mop with a nasty bite?

“A girl who's bespectacled
“May not get her nectacled.”
To call Ogden Nash a poet, or a satirist, or a humorist is to do him an injustice.
For he was all of these.
Plus, a ‘laughing philosopher,’ according to admiring literary critics.
When people asked Nash what he did for a living, he would say he was a “worsifer.”
[His special talent was making up words.]
