I wanted to recommend a book which I've just finished which answers the questions in this thread at a depth I haven't read anywhere else: Karl Popper "The Open Society and Its Enemies" He argues against the stories we've been told since the days of the Greeks, but also through Hegel and Marx, which have misled us. He points out that there have been writers advocating for a fair society ever since there have been writers advocating for a weighted advantage for 'good' people.
