Happy new year! After an important year for the #OpenWebIndex we are looking forward to this new year where we finally can share our full plans for Nolm and SUMA-Kit.
Expect weekly posts on this account where we keep you up to date with what we're doing.
🤗 Today is the day! We have exciting news to share!
Curlie.org with the support of OpenWebSearch.eu generously offers the entire Curlie web directory for download – for free!
🐿️ As of today you can get your hands on the largest human-edited web directory currently out there.
A special thanks goes to our project partner Leibniz Supercomputing Centre for hosting the download.

#EBDVF kicks off next week!
Our team hosts the session "Reclaim the Web! Towards sovereign AI, Analytics and Search Services in Europe" on 13 Nov, 12.00-13.00 CET.
The European #OpenWebIndex can support research & business applications.
- Learn about the need for such a public Web data infrastructure
- We will present #OWI use cases
- A strategic outlook on further usage possibilities, incl. future governance model structure & a financial model for the Open Search ecosystem will be given
Lots of ideas being thrown around today for the future of the #openwebindex .
With the end of EU funding for this critical infrastructure we're meeting up to discuss how to carry on.
🧮 Time for a Sunday numbers game
Did you know that the #OpenWebIndex pilot is currently based on over 1 Petabyte of raw data?
👉 This amount equals roughly over 1 billion books (assuming an average book contains about 300 pages and 100.000 words).
👉 In terms of songs, 1 Petabyte amounts to approximately 250 million MP3s (calculating with 4 MB per song file).
You can find more OWI stats directly via the OWI Dashboard: https://openwebindex.eu/
Save the Date for 19 September!
📌 For #businesses and #developers who are curious to work with the #OpenWebIndex data, our consortium partner A1 Slovenija will offer an exclusive online onboarding event, specifically addressing topics that are of interest to industry experts.
The event also forms part of September's #FreeWebSearch activities.

Polish-speaking audiences listen up!
OSF Chairman Dr. Stefan Voigt was recently interviewed by Sylwia Błach for Polish online magazine Homo Digital.
In the interview he speaks on the newly launched #OpenWebIndex and his vision on European digital sovereignty.
Thank you Sylwia Błach for the opportunity + your interest in the Open Search Foundation and the OpenWebSearch.eu project!
Next to AI crawler, there is also the OWI crawler, which may be good to allow :)
5 Days, 5 Reasons for the #OWI
R2: "Economic Potential for EU businesses"

TechSpot: Europe prepares trial for Open Web Index to reduce reliance on Google and Bing. “As Google users complain about the worsening quality of search results and GenAI integration, European organizations are working to plant the seeds of alternative solutions. One such initiative aims to build a public index to support new search engines and reduce Europe’s reliance on Google and Bing.”
Sceptical of the project but I really like the idea behind it, one to watch for sure.
