Promoting Europe’s Independence in #WebSearch
Today, the #OpenWebSearch.eu consortium (openwebsearch.eu/) released a pilot of a new infrastructure that aims to make European web search fairer, more transparent and commercially unbiased.

(2/2) Fortunately, an alternative is in the works. #CERN is a member of the #OpenWebSearch consortium, which is building a new web index based on #European values of #fairness and #privacy. The Open Web Index project aims to build a public index that offers an alternative to existing indexes held by companies like #Microsoft and #Google.

The system is crawling and indexing about 9 million URLs per hour, aiming to index 30–50% of the text-based web by the end of 2025.

The EU-funded OpenWebSearch project aims to launch a public, open search API by June as an alternative to US-dominated engines like Google & Bing.

In development for over two years, it will provide access to a petabyte of open web data under research or commercial licenses.

Motivated by concerns over AI-driven quality decline and industry consolidation, the team seeks to deliver useful results without heavy corporate control.

Starting to see (and getting a bit excited about) some components of openwebsearch.eu, and I was wondering if the EU will finally get its own Common Crawl, like dataset (commoncrawl.org).

It seems the crawling results aren't publicly accessible yet, and there's already some discussion about GDPR implications.

At this pace, we're still far from being able to compete with US-scale open data efforts 🤦‍♂️

To read more on howMOSAIC uses index fractions, read "Enriching science search with the open search framework MOSAIC." Index partitions are small or medium sized indices containing web documents related to a certain topic or for a particular purpose, such as geo-coordinates.

For my purposes, I find utilities like LitSift more useful for post-processing on the 1st query pass.
