the most i got in one photo is 4, no idea if there were more

the biggest fin was easily 2m tall, it's the one in the 2nd pic

#orca #orcas

a single orca surfaces and spouts, haze of water rising above its sharp fina single tremendously tall orca fin emerges from the watertwo orcas, one mid-spout and one that just did. the one that is currently spouting is far enough above water that we can see what might be its blowhole, or might be just a dimple or shadow, i'm really not sure. overhead a seagull flies4 surfacing orcas, fins lined up neatly, just post-spouting with haze still hanging in the air

#KillerWhales Find an ‘Unlikely Friend’ in #Dolphins
Off the coast of #BritishColumbia, dolphins lead #orcas to salmon and earn their share of lunch, a new study reveals.
#Pacific white-sided dolphins, a playful species with distinctive white coloration, are often seen alongside a population of fish-eating orcas in coastal Pacific Northwest waters. The orcas appear to tolerate the dolphins, showing no evasive or aggressive behavior.

The title is from a Swamp Zombies song.

Tea tableau in chilling tones of black, white, fawn, and ice blue. The central focus is artwork by Sue Coleman of three orcas breaching, including one drawn as First Nations art. There is a puffin figurine, and rocks embossed with snowflakes, and beaded felt work. The tea is S'Mores from Republic of Tea, made of cardboard, dandelion root, and cacao, which was good enough to make me want more.

"Orcas are adopting terrifying new behaviors. Are they getting smarter?

From sinking boats and feasting on shark livers to dining on whale tongue and tossing porpoises around for fun, orcas are displaying some fascinating — and sometimes terrifying — behaviors.

"These are animals with an incredibly complex and highly evolved brain," Deborah Giles, an orca researcher at the University of Washington and the nonprofit Wild Orca, told Live Science. 'They've got parts of their brain that are associated with memory and emotion that are significantly more developed than even in the human brain.'

But the scale and novelty of recent attacks have raised a question: Are orcas getting smarter? And if so, what's driving this shift?"

Orcas and dolphins form a tactical hunting alliance in the Pacific Northwest – research finds. New underwater footage suggests that Pacific white-sided dolphins help resident killer whales locate and catch Chinook salmon — looking instead for protection against mammal-hunting Bigg’s killer whales.

These #Orcas Are on the Brink—And So Is the #Science That Could Save Them
Southern resident #killerwhales have lived off #PacificNorthwest for 1000s of years. They don’t associate with any of estimated 50,000 other orcas living around the world, even those who share the same home waters. They have their own language, customs and culture, and they are the most studied population of orcas on Earth. Because of human encroachment, they are in trouble.

People already mistake orcas for dolphins, and this doesn't help. 🐋🐬

@HumToTable Just watched 2 documentaries on the capture & display of #Orcas by people/companies who split up Orca families & the in insolation w/o any stimulation in small pens for their profit & the mindless amusement of the public.

I'm not an #AnimalRights advocate but those documentaries are proof enough why Orcas should be left alone to swim free in the wild.

🐋🐬 A #Dalhousie University study documents potential interspecies cooperation between northern resident killer #whales and #Pacific white-sided #dolphins during #salmon hunting in #BritishColumbia waters.

Using #drones and camera tags, researchers observed killer whales following dolphins' lead to locate Chinook salmon, with the dolphins then sharing pieces of #fish caught by the orcas.
