• My University did that with the #PS3 and ran them as clusters becaude even tho #YellowDogLinux and any #OtherOS only gets 2 threads, the #Cell was still a competent and affordable #ppc64 machine that one could use #MPI and do #clustering at full blast without breaking a sweat. And mind you #Sony lost out €100+ just in parts cost on every PS3 phat sold at launch because winning the #FormatWar with #BluRay against #HDDVD was more important long-term.

#PS3 #OtherOS #FOSS And here comes the real adventure with open source software. My first task to be able to program on PS3 with "modern" setup was to be able to `git clone` project from GitHub and be able to push local changes back to remote repo. First problem I encountered were outdated cryptographics libraries which blocked my ssh connections and Firefox website loads.
SSH uses OpenSSL but Firefox has its own cryptograpy libraries called Network Security Services (NSS). tbc.

I soldered new capacitor onto the motherboard and also had to solder small wires from fan socket to nodes of circuit overcoming the problem of traces I ripped off the MB. This time I used dismantling instructions for PS3 I've found on YT, so I learned that proper moves made it quite simple. Applied also thermal paste onto the RSX and CellBE and PS3 was ready for testing after assembling. I was very happy when I had found out that PS3 turned on and operated stably. #PS3 #OtherOS #FOSS

#PS3 #OtherOS #FOSS So in the process of replacing the battery I tore a capacitor off the motherboard and almost ripped the power and main fan control socket from the traces. After such treatment PS3 stopped reacting to power-on button although red light of standby mode was on. I had to order new capacitor because I couldn't use the old one because after pulling out pins and SMD socket were deattached from capacitor. I ordered 1000uF (the same as original one) and 10VDC (larger than original).

Next step was to take care about installing new openssl and ssh but in the meantime I needed to change the CMOS battery. Unfortunately the battery is placed on the other site of motherboard, so practically I needed to dismantle whole PS3 for that. I did it by exploration without any instructions and I soon regretted it... tbc.

In 2021 I finally took some time to install Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 (YLD) on my PS3 fat, which patiently waited on my shelf. I discovered that Linux from around 2009 is quite capable, despite 256MB of PS3's RAM. However, cryptographical standards of the Web changed since then and I couldn't load any of modern web pages which used https protocol into my Firefox. The same happened for ssh connections. I worked it around with my other computer and downloaded git sources. [tbc.]

In 2010 I was really disappointed by Sony’s move to disable „OtherOS” option on PS3. I refused to install infamous 3.20 fw version on my fat PS3. I lost access to PlayStation Network but was planning to install Linux and play with CellBE processor. However it took me 11 years to finally do this. During that time I played on second PS3 slim I bought and upgraded to the newest FW version to use PSN and PS Plus, yeah, couldn’t resist cool game every month at that time. #PS3 #OtherOS #FOSS tbc.

• #Valve literally changed their [luckily illegal in places with #ConsumerProtection like the #EU] #SteamSubscriberAgreement to basically force people [in the #USA and the rest of the world] to kiss their #Steam account goodbye if they choose to join a Class Action.

• #Sony's #OtherOsSettlement didn't force them to #reinstate the #OtherOs functionality on the #PS3 and only gave US comsumers tiny cheques! A core functionality that was as much of a seller of the product as #BackwardsCompatibility and #BluRay playback...

• No Class Action against #Apple forced them to #undo shit they purposefully designed into products - espechally their #AntiRepairDesign with #DRM that basically requires a RAT to authenticate parts which they do to this very day and which they literally patented...

(Don't even get me started on the shitshow that is #iCloudLock which I hope the @EUCommission will #ban as it's *infringing on #ConsumerRights re: #property and causes thousands of tons of 100% avoidable #eWaste...)
