During the Ottoman Empire era, miniature palaces with elaborate decorations for birds to live in were carved on the outer walls of buildings, and this one, which remains at Istanbul's Topkapi Palace, appears to still be in use as a home for birds

I knew about the Turks and tulips, and I also knew, or at least thought I knew, about the Dutch and "tulip mania".

What I did not know about was the Flemish connection. In addition, I was only vaguely aware of how serious researchers have cut the "tulip mania" legend down to size.

🎞️ Beautiful abandoned buildings and ruins of #Lebanon, on #35mmfilm! Spectacular triple (and quintuple) arch windows, I searched them out over the length and breadth of Lebanon. Which one is your favourite?

High-society houses and palaces from the 19th century combine traditional #Ottoman characteristics with more Western influences.

The image depicts a vibrant pomegranate tree with numerous ripe fruits scattered across its branches. The tree is richly adorned with green leaves and the reddish-pink hues of the pomegranates add a striking contrast to the foliage. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on some of the fruit clusters.
In the background, there's a blurred natural setting that suggests an outdoor environment, possibly in Jerusalem given the mention in American Colony (Jerusalem). The photograph appears to be taken during daylight with clear visibility, capturing the essence of nature and agriculture. Notably, this image is from a collection attributed to Eric Matson and Edith Matson Photography.
The provided information indicates that the photo was likely captured between 1925-46 but possibly taken around or before 1900 as inferred from its negative origins. The American Colony (Jerusalem) refers to an early settlement in Jerusalem during Ottoman rule, known for a mix of religious communities and their architectural designs. This particular image is preserved with safety film transparency material that has been hand-colored.

"The result of fifteen years of research, #Merchants of Knowledge tells the story of the #multilingual and #transregional #Jewish #scholars who acted as a conduit between the powers through their commercial and intellectual connections.

A key thing to remember about these “merchants of knowledge,” said Morrison, is that while they were scholars, they came from families who were also involved in commerce. These commercial links are described in the book as “the scaffolding of #intellectual exchange.”

Furthermore, stressed Morrison, this exchange of #knowledge was expansive and went beyond Copernicus and #astronomy to cover fields such as #philosophy, #Qabbalah, #astrology, #medicine, and other branches of #science. Furthermore, these #merchants of knowledge, who were largely #Romaniot #Jews originating from the #ByzantineEmpire, belonged neither entirely to the eastern #Ottoman culture nor to the western #European tradition."
