SpaceX ma otrzymać kontrakt o wartości 2 miliardów dolarów na budowę satelitów dla rządu USA.

Jak doniósł „Wall Street Journal”, umowa ma dotyczyć stworzenia floty satelitów dla proponowanego przez prezydenta Trumpa systemu obrony przeciwrakietowej „Golden Dome” (Złota Kopuła).

Według raportu, zadaniem SpaceX będzie opracowanie i budowa nawet 600 satelitów, zdolnych do śledzenia wrogich pocisków rakietowych i samolotów. Projekt „Golden Dome” został zapowiedziany w maju jako amerykańska odpowiedź na systemy takie jak izraelska Żelazna Kopuła, zdolna przechwytywać nadlatujące rakiety. Pentagon do tej pory nie ujawnił jednak konkretnych szczegółów technicznych projektu.

Dwa miliardy dolarów dla SpaceX to prawdopodobnie tylko jedna z wielu umów związanych z tym ambitnym projektem. Według „WSJ”, w rozwój tarczy zaangażowane mogą być także inne firmy zbrojeniowe i technologiczne, jak Anduril Industries czy Palantir Technologies. Administracja Trumpa naciska, aby system został ukończony przed końcem obecnej kadencji prezydenckiej.

Raport dodaje, że Pentagon planuje wykorzystać rozległą sieć satelitarną SpaceX nie tylko do obrony przeciwrakietowej. Wojskowi są zainteresowani użyciem konstelacji (liczącej już ponad 8000 satelitów Starlink) także do innych celów, takich jak bezpieczna komunikacja wojskowa czy śledzenie pojazdów na ziemi.
