It has nothing to do with the legend. They are small plants, I don't know what they are. They have long hair that blows in the wind. They remind me of the long hair of Native Americans and wild horses. That's it. Panel of data figures illustrating genome assembly data for the endangered aquatic monocot Ottelia songmingensis reveal that LTR retrotransposons (>90%) and inefficient removal, together with two whole-genome duplications, jointly drove genome gigantism. In addition, data illustrate that a recent burst of LTR activity further accelerated expansion. Population resequencing reveals extremely low nucleotide diversity and long-term decline, underscoring both the evolutionary forces behind genome gigantism and urgent conservation concerns.
