Just did some PTT button surgery on my U94 radio interface adaptors.
A complaint I got at Kilkivan was that I was "scratchy" … this was not because my signal was low, it was because the microphone connection was bad. Yaesu in their wisdom, wire the PTT in series with the microphone element, so any scratchiness in the PTT switch causes audio scratchiness.
Alinco copied this mistake when they decided to copy the Yaesu VX-6/VX-7 interface on their DJ-G7T.
Kenwood's set-up is largely immune to this, since the PTT is a separate pin to the microphone.
These PTT adaptors (sourced from Amazon a few years back) use a cheap tactile PCB-mount switch… easiest bet was to just replace this with a good quality pushbutton. Here, I used Jaycar part number SP0657, which is a IP-67 rated dome pushbutton.
I've been using this sort of pushbutton on the bicycle to drive the FT-857D there for years. Very reliable.
It's a bit of a squeeze to get it all shut again, but I think this will work a lot better.
We've got an #EmergencyCommsExercise event at Imbil this long week-end, so we'll put it to good use.
