New on my #blog: aspi.blog/2025/05/31/50th-birt
On the actual day of my 50th birthday I offer up an account of voyage on The Waverley. Note that this post also includes a link to a post that I scheduled in advance for this day (aspi.blog/2025/05/31/50/)

Still happily sailing "doon the watter" of the magnificent Clyde Coast, and all around Scottish and UK waters.

For #MeerMittwoch here's a view of #Portsmouth from the sea, showing the historic waterfront with the Round Tower and Hot Walls to the right then the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior to the left beyond Spice Island. Taken from the paddle steamer Waverley in 2022.

A mostly overcast day although some blue peeks through the thinner sheets of cloud in the sky, but it feels fairly warm. We're on the sea and with a small bit of wake present to the bottom right on the calm, green-blue water's surface we can tell we're at the aft of boat heading away from the land we're looking back at. That land is low-lying with a shallow beach on the right backed up by medieval stone fortifications around ten metres high with a couple of slightly larger towers on them, the leftmost of which is very round. The shoreline then becomes a wall of boulders for flood and erosion protection from the sea and this continues left almost fully before disappearing back on itself behind the spit of land here. An eclectic range of townhouses line the shore there, some up to five storeys in height. In the distance to the left there is a tall tower in white with a sharp spire and glass-fronted viewing areas high up. It bulges out with a skeletal white framework that represents billowing sails. Leftmost of all in the distance we can see masts rising up from an old sailing ship that's docked.

Found this cool playground shaped like a paddle steamer near where the Bremer and Brisbane rivers meet.

Everything went a bit EM Forster between Montreux and Lausanne.

We travelled back in time for that leg of the journey – aboard an immaculately restored paddle steamer. Aboard the boat it is forever the Belle Époque, just with modern prices and credit card machines.

I wouldn't have been surprised to bump into Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy Honeychurch.

Replica of the paddle steamer "Comet" on display in Port Glasgow. The image shows a small paddle steamer viewed from its front left, so it is pointing left out of the frame. It has a red lower hull and black upper hull and mast and the name COMET is on the bow. It is surrounded by black railings and there is a line of small trees cutting across the frame in the background. The sky is blue.

The prow of the "Waverley", the oldest ocean-going paddle steamer in the world, is reflected in the gently rippled waters of Oban Harbour.

Echuca, Victoria, on the Murray River (the border of Victoria and New South Wales).
Before the railway, paddle steamers carried passengers and cargo up and down the river.

A murky brown river edged by many gum trees hanging over. There are a handful of s paddle steamers along the bank. The near one has two decks with paddle wheels on either side (or the covering of them). Ladders leaning on these provide access between the desk. The top level has a cabin where the ship is street and a large black funnel. The lower level has a flat area with a large box in the cente and a narrow bench seat at the very front where passengers can sit. At the front is a flag, hanging limp, with a Union Jack, blue & white stripes and a red cross with stars along it.
The paddle steamers are the back are mostly small, but one has large enclosed areas over two levels.

On this day in history. The paddle steamer Maid of the Loch was launched on Loch Lomond 71 years ago today, on 5 March 1953, and regularly sailed on the loch until 1981. It is hoped to return her to service. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lom

WATCH: Following Paddle Steamer Waverley to the Thames, part 1 - leaving Ipswich, 9.50am 5 October 2023.
Paddle Steamer Waverley is making her final departure for this season from Ipswich, and sailing to London, with a call at Clacton-on-Sea - so I decided to follow her, recording her call at the pier, and her passage between Gravesend and Tilbury on the River Thames.
Catch her dramatic and entertaining arrival at Clacton in our next installment!

About last night. Accidental chasing down of the Waverley and a Fred Olsen cruise ship by rib. I can’t work out what was more interesting; doing 40 knots or the fact I was running on Vapor in the fuel tank 🤦
