"Pan American Airways pioneered commercial airline service to Latin America and the Caribbean in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when air travel was first developing into a viable form of transportation. In less than three years, Pan American’s routes increased from an inaugural 261-mile Miami-Havana line to over 19,000 miles throughout two continents. By 1930, the Pan American Airways System linked twenty-nine Latin American and Caribbean countries and territories with regularly scheduled airmail, passenger, and cargo flights. Pan American Airways began service in Central America with the Ford 5-AT Tri-Motor, a robust, three-engine, twelve-passenger airliner affectionately known as the “Tin Goose.” Tri-Motors departed Cristóbal in the Panama Canal Zone for Guatemala two-to-three times per week, linking cities in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. "Jet streams are fast flowing westerly (moving west to east) air currents found around the world. Located in the tropopause, the layer of the atmosphere just below the stratosphere, jet streams are used in the aviation industry to shorten flying time all over the world. Ever wonder why jets frequently travel polar routes? In addition to covering a shorter distance, west to east routes may take advantage of the jet stream to further shorten flying time. Jet streams are located from 30,000 to 56,000 feet above the surface of the Earth and form at the boundaries of warm air and cold air. The strong winds, up to 200 miles an hour, are formed because of the pressure variations between the two temperatures of air. Because of the earth's rotation, the jet stream, does not move in a straight line. In November 1952, Captain Logan Scott, piloting a Pan American World Airways Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, made history by following these fast-flowing winds. Taking off from Tokyo, Japan bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, this flight flew non-stop for 3,908 miles and shaved off seven hours of flying time using the jet stream. "When introduced in 1949 by Pan American World Airways, the four-engine Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was considered one of the most luxurious long-range airliners. The aircraft was also very demanding to fly and maintain. It required a flight crew of five to operate and an exhaustive maintenance schedule. A Pan American Boeing 377 operations manual contained sections on cruise control, emergency procedures, operating procedures, performance, radio, systems, and design. “By the Book: Airliner Flight, Maintenance, and Training Manuals” has been extended until December. "#Onthisday in 1949, Pan American World Airways introduced the Boeing 377 into service on the densely traveled San Francisco to Honolulu route. The 377, named the #Stratocruiser, was Boeing's first post-war commercial aircraft and was designed as a luxurious, long-range commercial airliner. Its spacious cabin could accommodate up to 100 passengers, depending on the seating configuration. It also featured a lower deck lounge, complete with a cocktail bar. The cost per airplane was $1.2 million at the time, or nearly $17 million today. Did you ever fly on a #Stratocruiser? Image: Pan American World Airways, Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, 1949. "“No matter how you look at it - here’s America’s no. 1 glamour car!” Following Pan American’s pioneering start of scheduled transpacific air travel in 1935 through their fleet of Clipper flying boats, the word "clipper" became synonymous with hope, progress, and the arrival of a new era. Even in the late forties when this Packard advertisement was produced, Clipper was still a name companies wanted to be associated with. “Two star performers: the globe-girdling Pan American Clipper and the beautiful new Packard Clipper.” Image: Pan American World Airways, Packard advertisement, late 1940s. ""%!(EXTRA string=In 1923, Igor Sikorsky founded the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation (later renamed the Sikorsky Manufacturing Company). One of the most important early Sikorsky aircraft, the S-42, was developed to meet the requirements of Pan American Airways’ president Juan T. Trippe for a large, long-range, trans-oceanic flying boat. Designed by Igor Sikorsky, with input from Charles A. Lindbergh, it could carry a crew of four and thirty-two passengers up to 1,200 miles. In 1935, the S-42 named “Pan American Clipper” was modified for extended range to survey the Pacific route and was later used for regular service on the Manila–Hong Kong leg. An S-42B flew South Pacific survey missions.
