Despite the Dutch railways being on strike I made it to the #Paradiso yesterday evening to see #LucyDacus play. It was well worth the extra travel time. Sound was not that good (thundering kick with eerie acoustic guitars) but Lucy and her band were enjoying it so much and played everything with a lot of passion. And wit. They had fun. And it showed. What also helps is that her songs are just so good and that they were thoughtfully transposed to a live setting.

Lucy Dacus in Paradiso was fantastisch, en de assistentie i.v.m. de rolstoel van mijn medeconcertganger was ook fantastisch. Ik wens iedereen morgen bij het tweede concert net zo'n fijne avond toe.

Paradies 400 (cheap drug store film?)

Yes, the #Paradies400 has been a #drugstorefilm / #cheapfilm of #DMDrogerieMarkt, a bigger #drugstorediscounter here in germany. #FotoParadies, #Paradiso etc. were the own brands of #DM for re-labeled (cheap) films of brands like Fujifilm or Kodak that were available as negative and slide films.

This is now long gone: I was able to buy my last, already expired #Paradiso100 slide film at a reduced price in 2007 or 2008. 😁

A few weeks ago, Nada Surf played at Paard in The Hague — another legendary Dutch venue, though one I don’t often visit. After a long day at work, I wasn’t really feeling up for it. It’s a bit farther than Amsterdam, and there were plenty of reasons to skip this one. But I’m so glad I didn’t. It felt like the band had something to prove, playing outside their usual Amsterdam stronghold, and the audience didn’t entirely know what to expect — I got the sense many were there just to hear Popular. They got that, sure, but the heart of the set was built around songs from their fantastic new album, Moon Mirror.

Matthew Caws is a great singer, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard him sing with such range and clarity as he did that night. When everything falls into place like that — and it really did — you realize just how powerful a deeply personal song like Mathilda can be. How behind their controlled, thoughtful sound lie beautiful stories and gorgeous guitar work. Nada Surf doesn’t go for big emotional gestures — they’re not flashy or showy — but on nights like this, you listen more closely and discover an intimate beauty you rarely find elsewhere.

And then, as if that weren’t enough, they played Cold to See Clear — a hidden gem in their overwhelmingly rich catalog.

You know the night before the day after was good when you wake up with a big shit-eating grin on your face and only one thought on your mind: holy fuck that was a hell of a gig.

It was fast, frantic and over before I knew what happened. The pit was large, there was crowd surfing and even a stage jumper. After the gig ended there was a singalong to the Pogues' Dirty Old Town and a Free Palestine chant because we weren't ready to leave.

It was glorious!
