Necromeny (Ecology 🏞️)

Necromeny is a symbiotic relationship where an animal infects a host and waits inside its body until its death, at which point it develops and completes its life-cycle on the cadaver, feeding on the decaying matter and the subsequent bacterial growth. As the necromenic animal benefits from the relationship while the host is unharmed, it is an example of commensalism....

Sterile insect technique (Parasitology 🧬)

The sterile insect technique is a method of biological insect control, whereby overwhelming numbers of sterile insects are released into the wild. @An0n @Alice I was chuffed to learn that mosquito birth control has been deployed! Ex: civilbeat.org/2023/04/historic

I won't be surprised if Christofascist DOGE script kiddies kill EPA funding to these pilot programs via bad search & replace.

(In all seriousness, there are several kinds of mosquito control programs that utilize Wolbachia, all pretty cool, c.f. worldmosquitoprogram.org/en/le .)

Farewell, Dickson Despommier.

He taught medical #parasitology and studied an important human #parasite, Trichinella Spiralis.

He co-authored the textbook, Parasitic Diseases, and wrote West Nile Story about the virus that invaded America in 1999.

archive.org/details/westnilest

On This Week in Parasitism, he taught me about organisms like Schistosoma, Ascaris, and Toxoplasma, and their importance for the larger ecosystem. I'll miss his voice telling us about the weather in New Jersey.
