Correlation does not mean causation. But I think this bears further looking into.

Two cartesian graphs one above the other. Both have time on the horizontal access, and the release of the first iPhone in September 2007 is marked on both.

The data for top graph comes from Gartner Inc. It shows the number of smartphones sold to end users from 2007 to 2023. The line begins at about 125 million units and is slowly rising but almost horizontal, until late 2009 when it begins to rise rapidly. By 2016 sales have reached one and a half billion and it begins to level off there.

The bottom graph shows the number of annual bicycle fatalities in the US from 1975 to 2025 as compiled by the League of American Bicyclists. The line begins at 1000 killed per year declines in a bumpy line from then until 2003 when it reaches about 630. It then rockets up to nearly 800 per year in 2005 when it resumes declining again. It reaches a record low of 623 in 2010. The line then begins climbing ever more steeply. In 2023 (the latest year for which we have numbers) bicycle fatalities reached a record high of 1166.
