“Perception, like clouds, is shaped more by the observer than the object. One person sees a horse galloping through the sky; another sees a face, a dragon, or nothing at all. The sky doesn’t change—the viewer does. And so it is with images. We do not see the world as it is; we see it as we have learned to see it. […]
Our visual understanding of the world is constructed, shaped by repetition, exposure, emotion, and education.”

Some books you read. Others read you back. 📖✨

Returning to Atwood's Cat's Eye (again).

Every re-read reveals new layers about how institutions fail us, how #trauma shapes #perception, and how #art becomes #survival.

As someone who's lived through foster care, medical gaslighting, and academic #ableism, Elaine's sharp observations of power and complicity hit differently each time.

Literature as a mirror and a map.

Alt-text:
Paperback copy of Margaret Atwood's "Cat's Eye" resting on layered vintage lace and patterned fabrics. The yellow book cover features two girls in summer dresses sitting close together, with "Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize" noted below the title.

Secondary Description:
Like an archaeological discovery, Atwood's Cat's Eye emerges from layers of intricate lace—delicate paisley spirals and floral motifs creating a textile palimpsest beneath the book's weathered spine. The cover's two girls, frozen in their childhood intimacy, seem to whisper secrets across the ornate fabrics that cradle them. One blonde, one brunette, they sit in eternal summer yellow, their small bodies pressed together in that particular closeness that precedes betrayal or transcendence.

The decorative patterns beneath—swirling paisleys like fossilised tears, geometric flowers blooming in black and white—create a mandala of memory, each thread a story within the story. The book rests here not merely as an object but as a portal; its Man Booker Prize notation is a quiet testament to the power of bearing witness. In this tableau, domestic beauty and literary weight converge, the delicate lacework beneath echoing the novel's intricate exploration of girlhood's sharp-edged beauty—all surfaces and hidden depths, patterns that conceal and reveal the truths we carry.

This is a great article on a study on cognition and the human brain [1]. The authors argue that the brain uses 20% of the human body's total energy. Much of this energy is not used for conscious attention but rather for unconscious "prediction" of the future and possible actions. This automated "prediction module" is one of the most interesting aspects of the human brain because it functions autonomously, outside of our conscious attention or willful influence. Very little is known about this "black box" in our heads that we use and rely on daily for so many tasks. I always find this fascinating. Understanding this module may be key to combating misinformation, manipulation, and fake news in the future.
