Hello #Fediverse, today’s OS-tans are two members of the Madobe family: Yū Madobe (窓辺ゆう) and Ai Madobe (窓辺あい), the Windows 8 and 8.1 mascots in Japan!

Yū and Ai debuted in Japan in 2012 as part of the Windows 8 Pro DSP Commemorative Packs created by Windows Navi+. These packs included exclusive system sounds and wallpapers

The sisters share a birthdate of November 18, 1996. Both are the same height at 152 cm, which is 8 cm shorter than Nanami, but their personalities set them apart.

Both sisters struggle with sports but excelled in tech. Their voices were provided by talented actresses Asuka Nishi (Yū) and Nao Tamura (Ai), who even sang together in promotional tracks like *Whatever the Future Holds*.

(2/2) “Same Place, Different Universe” #Webnovel Chapter 9

The other two illustrations for this chapter; I had plans for an #Illustration for the scene at the beginning of the chapter, but I already spent so much time on these ones that I skipped it due to time 😔

Auriga’s outfit in The Defenestrators is based on punk fashion with military elements, but within the context of the setting: the military elements are the pieces of armor. I struggled so much with what team she’d be in.

There were many possibilities that would’ve worked, but I ultimately decided that she returned to The Defenestrators. My decision was influenced by me wanting to balance out the team’s line-up more by having 2 former(?) CC members instead of just one. Story-wise, it’s also to show that this team successfully made amends with at least one of its members that previously left it on not so good terms, but not all of them.

Lorraine’s outfit is based on 80’s glam punk, and Wolfgang’s is based on 18th century menswear. This illustration took the longest because of the lighting effects and I tried my best to get them how I intended when I’m just working with a trackpad so I did those effects in Inkscape as much as I could.

Aside from the backgrounds, these were all #VectorArt! The illustration of Lorraine and Wolfgang has additional color lighting effects which I applied with vectors like this after the shading was finished:
*Select the base path and the shadow path on it
*Duplicate both paths
*Use the Difference Boolean Operation to subtract the duplicated shadow path from the duplicated base path
*Paste the style of the lighting onto the remaining path and set its blend mode to Soft Light
*Lower the shape layer until it’s where it should be

This process is a lot more efficient than what I used to do for color lighting 🥲

In this chapter I didn’t expect to spend so much time writing out how a TV commercial goes, but it was part of introducing these characters. The chapter ends by playing a bit more of the recording that Marcia found, which reveals another surprise…

Title: Will You Be Going to the Carnival?

This is the most ambitious chapter I published! Some of the members of The Defenestrators had cameo appearances in an earlier chapter, or appeared in “To the Visitors…” but didn’t have #Illustrations. At those times I didn’t have finalized designs for some of them.

More of its members appeared in this chapter through a TV commercial announcing their next performance.

When I drafted the outline for this chapter, that scene was just a way to mention that a carnival would be coming up to be the next location of the story, but because these characters only appeared through cameos, I got tempted enough to illustrate scenes that showed each of them. I overcomplicated this again, but I took this as a chance to introduce several characters that I previously struggled with.

During the drafting of the chapter, I made some final decisions on three characters I struggled with and came up with one I wanted to design, but had no previous concept for. I have a lot of notes about this:

I posted these two illustrations side by side to show the similarities and contrasts with Marilyn’s and Arke’s designs since Marilyn is based on OS/2 and Arke is based on one of OS/2's successors (ArcaOS).

When I designed each of the outfits for this chapter, they follow general themes to tie them together but are also based on different styles; Marilyn’s is based on Nerdcore fashion, Priscilla’s is based on a business outfit turned punk, and Arke’s is a futuristic punk style.

The article for this story and a few others were updated on the project wiki, and more updates will be coming with articles for these characters.

“Same Place, Different Universe” #Webnovel Chapter 9 #WIP 2 and 3

This post combines two WIPs featuring two of the characters that’ll appear in this chapter, and a backdrop I probably spent way more time on than needed for an illustration, but I still liked how it turned out 🥲 The second is overdue here; I already posted it on my project site and blog so I’m merging it with the post for the third.

The illustration with her and Wolfgang in their performance outfits shows hers as a silhouette, so hers will be shown after the chapter is published.

Lorraine is one of the characters that I had design ideas for but really struggled to come up with a solid design until something clicked while I was sketching out several possible outfit variants.

One of the issues I got stuck on was where to put the red and white checkered pattern; I wanted to include it but also keep her outfit easy enough to draw to avoid the frustration I faced with designing outfits that were difficult to draw consistently.

The design for her normal outfit is mostly finalized and has what I intended for her. I also wanted to add a bow in her hair or add goggles, but I’m still not sure if I will in her finalized design. The line art hasn’t been adjusted yet.

Wolfgang’s normal design will be shown after the chapter is published. His outfit here is based on 18th century formal menswear fused with punk. I had this general idea for his design in Version 1, but never got to drawing him in this until now.

The 3D render is a stylized city as a stage backdrop; I used BlenderKit models and modeled a few buildings from scratch in Blender. I painted a watercolor effect in the sky and added a posterize filter to make the colors flatter and more abstract in Krita.

I posted this on my site and blog a few days ago but have been so busy 😅

Marilyn’s (OS/2) and Priscilla’s (IBM PC and PC-DOS) first drawn appearances in Operating Superstars Version 3! These are their performance outfits with The Defenestrators, the team they originally co-founded to challenge Defending Waits for Nobody. Although the team didn’t succeed in its original goal, its members still enjoy success through the loyal following of supporters that they have.

Each of the members’ performance outfits follow a general theme of punk and incorporating the team colors (blue, orange and black), but there are differences reflecting each of their styles. I tried to go for a Nerdcore and punk look with Marilyn’s performance outfit. Priscilla’s is modeled after a business suit, and she styled her hair.

Marilyn’s and Priscilla’s Version 2 designs are included here for comparison. I have plans to adjust Marilyn’s regular outfit to take cues from nerdcore and 2000’s fashion; hers will be a bit more modern since she also represents eComStation (OS/2’s first successor; it was actively developed through the 2000’s). Priscilla’s outfit will be the same as before but with a small change or two.

If I’m finalizing Marilyn’s hair being purple now, it’ll also have teal streaks, or maybe it’ll be a gradient since I like both equally. It could also be that she originally had teal hair when she became an OS, but later changed it when she tried to re-invent herself during the OS/2 Warp era. 🤔

This’ll be a very ambitious chapter; The Defenestrators make an appearance on TV in the chapter, and I’ll be making illustrations that feature six of its members in their performance outfits while I also try to finalize their normal outfits for their drawings that’ll be in their articles.

Operating Superstars — Two new #Wiki articles

These are the articles for two characters that were introduced in chapter 5 of “Same Place, Different Universe”. I published these a few days ago. Publishing them was part of the catching up to do cleared another task off of my to-do list for the project, and the list is small enough now that I’m ready to continue the illustrations for chapter 9.

Clarkia (macOS Sierra and High Sierra) is Kiah’s rival within Chariots of Colors; Kiah is her predecessor and their rivalry is inspired by some archetypes that are popular in shounen anime. In particular I’d say that Asta’s and Yuno’s rivalry in Black Clover would be an inspiration. Clarkia is prim and proper, but comically serious and has a sense of humor that’s different from what she usually lets on. *hint* It’s inspired by High Sierra’s announcement in WWDC.

Pearl (iPhone 6/6s line) is the teammate that Kiah works with the most. She is polite and helpful, and skillful at breaking up conflicts. She is an influential fashion designer and interior decorator and started at least one fashion trend within her sector and beyond; this references the rise of Millennial Pink and the popularity of rose gold as a color option for hardware which the iPhone 6s is widely credited for.

I’ve been focused the most on “Same Place, Different Universe” lately, but also trying to catch up with writing more articles for characters that appeared in early IWASD chapters but don’t have articles yet.

Gerald (General Comprehensive Operating System) and Multiplicia “Multi” (Multics) were introduced in chapter 1, though Multi was only mentioned and made her first real appearance in chapter 11. I published the first versions of their articles a few days ago but was so busy that I couldn’t publish the announcement on my project site and blog the same day, let alone also publish this announcement here on the same day.

Their articles depict a bit about the complicated relationship that they had as colleagues in Great Iron Smithing Crew. They were two of the most well-known OSes on the team, and I intend for them to be the “jerk with a heart of gold” types though in different ways. Multi’s overworld “sprite” is of her appearance as of when she was part of GISC.

The dynamics between them are meant to be kind of tragic; their rivalry may not have been what it was if Gerald didn’t feel like he always had to keep up with Multi, but he hated being seen as unremarkable and unable to adapt; when Multi helped him, he was thankful for that, but might’ve also on some level seen that as being pitied which he also hates.

Part of Multi’s characterization about her over ambitiousness and tendencies towards complex solutions but valuing that other OSes can come up with simpler solutions is inspired by my own tendencies 🥲

Title: ...More to Shudder About, But Our Curiosity is Going to Compel Us to Keep Going

The listening of the recording from the previous chapter continues. It takes a turn for the serious for what the recordings mention, and the disagreements between the two characters listening to them.

In the recordings, I intended to portray the character that made them as a very conflicted person that struggles with her loyalty to POMME vs. her discontent that led her to nearly leave vs. her resentment towards Concordia vs. wanting her approval. Concordia is supposed to be a divisive character through how she’s been mentioned. I’d like to get to a chapter where she appears, and there might be a chance for that.

I usually try to avoid mood whiplash within the same chapter, but it happened when I added the silly scene with Mi-ho and Clarkia. That scene was meant to lighten tone a bit so it wasn't all serious, and I like having chances to feature more characters in a chapter if only one or two are the focus.

In the illustration of Marcia looking at a holographic screen, I would’ve liked to add legible easter eggs on the documents, but it was too difficult when her notes are supposed to be hand-written and I’m mostly using the trackpad 😔

The background and the holographic screen were made in #Blender3D, though I added the scan lines, scribbles and a lighting effect were made in #Inkscape along with the character drawings

This one is Nanami Madobe (窓辺ななみ), the official mascot for Windows 7 in Japan! She’s one of the most well-known OS-tans to many people.

A Twitter account dedicated to her was created on September 14, 2009, to share Windows 7 updates, while her first official appearance came shortly after. On September 24, 2009, it was revealed that Nanami was part of a special Windows 7 Ultimate promotional bundle, limited to 7,777 preorders. This exclusive set included system sounds and wallpapers.

Born on April 6, Nanami is depicted as a first-year college student from a tech-savvy family with a father and brother who are PC enthusiasts. Despite being inexperienced, she was roped into working part-time at a computer parts shop when Windows 7 debuted.

Piritta (PDP-6, PDP-10 series and TOPS-10) and Olympia (PDP-12).

Piritta is a highly influential engineer that is very friendly and polite but has a rebellious side; she contributed to two countercultures which correspond to the Hacker Culture that started in the 1960’s, and the Microcomputer Revolution in the 1970’s. The latter was through a collaboration due to Altair BASIC being written on a PDP-10. These countercultures challenged what kind of work was acceptable for OSes to do to be accepted in Techlandian society.

This is just for story purposes, but she’s a former member of her sector’s most formidable Warrior guild before she left it to become an OS and join the Programmable Darling Patrol.

Olympia is admittedly a member of the PrDP that in some ways struggles to stand out, and she is rather reclusive. However, she is liked by many people who worked with her; she is skilled at adapting her style to work with a wide range of students. Adaptability is her strength, though it can also make it more difficult for her to stand out; the PDP-12 had one of the shortest production runs of the PDP line-up, and it can run PDP-8 software, but the PDP-8 was still widely used when the 12 was released.

Just in time for #Halloween with a little time to spare, this chapter shows the first part of the party that Piroska, Damien and Juna attend! I posted this chapter with only one #Illustration since it’s a larger than usual one and to meet this deadline, but I still hope to at a later time make a render of the teleporter or of the console the characters used to operate it.

Many characters appeared in this chapter; it also reveals #Worldbuilding details about the process and the technology of teleporting to the Human World.

It was tense for Damien to enter the room with the teleporter that led him to receive the tape that that took him to Techlandia, which led to his life to change forever! The conversation between him and Piroska highlights the similarities and differences in their situations as arrivals from the Human World.

Returning for this party would be bittersweet for them in different ways, but they still hope to have fun there. It may also be a challenge for Juna, due to her limited knowledge of the Human World, but she needs to go with since she’s Damien’s mentor.

I'm finished with the draft for this chapter and just need to finish the illustrations. The draft for chapter 7 is mostly finished and so is chapter 8, but 8 has been tricky with what to include, that I cut out a scene that I started writing for it which would've introduced another character, but I might be able to repurpose it later.

Since I published this update on my project site, I started shading this illustration and I should be ready to publish the chapter within the next day or two.

One of them is the finished illustration of Clarkia entering the cafeteria (which I also spent a lot of time modeling the details on the windows), and the other illustration introduces Pearl (iPhone 6/6s) after she de-escalated an argument between Kiah and Clarkia, which Marcia, Fiore and Antares witnessed. That illustration also shows Fiore in her aviator jacket.

From Fiore’s appearance in this chapter, I now think of her as someone who is often terrified of social interactions and dislikes public speaking, but has a fearless side when flying planes, hang-gliding or being aboard a space station.

Pearl is a fashion designer and interior decorator. She became influential since the 6s popularized rose gold as a color option, which according to some articles, may have also influenced the popularity of “Millennial Pink” as an interior decor color.

Title: I Guessed Correctly That She Got It From Another Universe

This is another silly chapter though it leads into the next plot point and more clues about Chariots of Colors’ counterpart. Marcia meets up with Antares to play the tape that Marcia found since Antares is the only CC member known to have a tape recorder.

One that might be used to control machinery more often, but it can still record or play tapes.

The background for this illustration is one I’m proud of but also frustrated by; the render turned out rougher than usual and I had to manually draw in several lines and it’s obvious where I needed to when I was making the final edits. One of them was that I forgot to add the decorations at the bottom of the cafeteria windows on the hallway side which I realized after I rendered that hallway. It took a few tries to successfully render 🫠

I spent a lot of time finding the materials that I thought would’ve been the best fit for parts of Chariots of Colors’ headquarters, but when I saw that multicolor tile material that I chose for an accent wall, I immediately thought to include it somewhere in their HQ!
