I wear a midi-length black dress with chaotic yellow lines all over it, holding a round box that contains my certificate. Everyone else who is present in person wears a black gown and a black hat, except for Tanja who wears a black suit, because she thinks the gowns look ridiculous and a face-mask.

I survived my defense surprisingly well and am now officially Doctor Fiona Johanna Weber. 😊

And as a consequence I’ve now changed my display name to obnoxiously point that out to everyone (for a week or so, I promise I won’t overdo it).

Thanks a lot again for everyone who helped me on my way to this point and I’m now going to lean back a little bit to be proud for a moment 😉.

4. Decision tree policy optimization techniques based on direct policy search will eventually outperform Q-learning-based techniques. (This thesis, Part II)
5. Complex models are used in machine learning by default, but Occam’s razor implies that one must use the simplest possible model that achieves satisfactory performance.
6. Mathematically proving optimality is useful for practical applications.
7 Humanity will not reach Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) by scaling up Large Language Models (LLMs).
8. Publishing preprints on open archives such as Arxiv achieves more gain than harm in the modern academic system.
